OK- I have been sick this evening, which is probably a big portion of the mopeyness I was feeling earlier today, so I stayed in and was listening to a pod-cast interview of the author of ‘Panty Explosion- the Japanese Psychic Schoolgirl Role Playing Game.’ As the interview came to an end, the interviewers asked if there was anything he wanted to add- and he said he wanted to plug this show he was really into at the moment- “Majisuka Gakuen.’ He went on to talk about how it was basically his game without the psychic powers and they briefly discussed AKB48 and the upcoming janken tournament.
This is totally kewl for me because I am the one who introduced the author to ‘Majisuka Gakuen.’ I preordered the new edition of Panty Explosion and he was giving custom sketches away to everyone who preordered. I asked for a sketch of Gekikara from Majisuka and sent him a link to my blog post that raved about the show. He replied that it looked interesting and he would check it out. He also sent me a totally kewl sketch of Gekikara.
So, I am doing my part in spreading the gospel of AKB48 and the awesomeness of Majisuka Gakuen.
Kewl.

Majisuka Gakuen and Human Liberation
Majisuka Gakuen and its recent sequel are powerfully important television programs. Majisuka succeeds both as a work of popular entertainment and as a feminist deconstruction of oppressive gender expectations. While I suspect the male producers of Majisuka are deliberately trying to undermine the potentially liberatory images of this amazing program by showing scenes of the production of this fantasy program, Majisuka Gakuen presents strong young women taking command of
their lives and destinies in ways traditionally reserved for men. One hopes that the little girls and young women of Japan, as well as the fellows of the world, take to heart these images of tough determined young women fighting for honor and their destiny and better understand that all of us, even women, should have the freedom to express our humanity in the ways we find most fulfilling.
The central premise of Majisuka Gakuen is a 'yankee' girls' school. As a yankee school, Majisuka Gakuen is run entirely by all girl gangs. The first series follows second year transfer student Maeda Atsuko as she is forced to fight her way through one gang after another, before she finally confronts the Four Heavenly Queens and the second in command of the top gang at Majijo, the wind-instrument club, Rappappa. Maeda is quiet, sullen, and looking to stop fighting because her yankee ways got her best friend killed. Still, Maeda is an experienced and skilled fighter and thus everyone must prove they deserve their position in the school by defeating her. Unfortunately for the school's existing power structure no one can defeat Maeda.
Maeda is a beautiful and strong character and she draws the viewer into the show immediately, but this reviewer fell completely in love with the series when two supporting characters emerged that have taken a much greater lead this year in the second series. First is Nezumi, played by the perfect and beautiful Watanabe Mayu. Had
it not been for Nezumi's Machiavellian plotting the powers that be in the world of yankees would likely have lost interest in Maeda quite quickly as all the quiet loner wanted was to study nursing and be left alone. Nezumi, a younger student whose intellect far out shown her ability to fight, quietly assured everyone that she was on their side and advised them of the importance of targeting one person or another for combat. Her plot is to destabilize the school so that her mouse army might arise and take control of the political situation.
When Gekikara refused to stop giggling, regardless of how much of her own blood covered her face and Maeda's knuckles, I knew Majisuka Gakuen was the greatest television program created by humanity. The mentally unhinged unstoppable killer is a common character for fantastical fiction dating to well before Bob Kane created the Joker for Batman to battle. Gekikara subverts this paradigm by making the character a beautiful young woman who had been, until recently, imprisoned in a mental institution for killing a member of the Yakuza.
Gekikara is so fearsome, not so much because she is a skilled fighter but, because she simply loves violence and wont stop. In her showdown with Maeda, this Heavenly Queen of Rappappa could only be stopped with the intervention of Maeda's top allies. Even then Gekikara was the only one defeated by Maeda to walk away. As she left giggling, Gekikara declared Maeda to be the God of Death.
From an anarchist-feminist perspective, these are not at all ideal characters. Most all of them embrace violence and accept the underlying logic of a social hierarchy based upon martial skills. While Nezumi rejects the notion that one's ability to fight should rule the day, she still is seeking to stand atop a hierarchy of authority over other young women. But our entertainment does not have to be politically pure to be great entertainment and provide an important positive political message.
In the real world of the idols of AKB48, Akimoto Sayaka felt she had to resign her position as captain of the Team K because of the appearance she might have done something naughty with a male guest that spent the night at her place. In the world of Majisuka, Black, formerly of the Four Heavenly Queens, had a child out of wedlock and hospitalized the last person to ask who the father was. While it is not an ideal world where women use their power in ideal ways, Majisuka Gakuen shows us that another world is possible where men do not have the power to define what it means to be a woman and what it means to be a good woman. The women of Majisuka have taken their destinies in their hands. Each of them is willing to fight for her honor, dignity, and definition of self. Not all of them succeed in their struggles, but all of them fight, refusing to let anyone define who they are without standing up for themselves. Most do this through straight-up fisticuffs, but Nezumi does it through plotting and manipulation. Not completely helpless on the field of battle, Nezumi is one of the most beautiful creatures in all of existence: a strong, determined, and brilliant woman.

Majsuka Gakuen became my favorite television program before I even knew what the words found before the opening credits, 'AKB48 in', meant. I only came to love the program more when I learned about what AKB48 was. Acting is pretending, but to portray power and strength one needs some reserve of such power and strength. Majisuka Gakuen has shown us that the young women of AKB48 have power and strength in ways most do not normally associate with idols. For this reason the show is one of the most successful exercises in feminist pop culture ever created. One hopes that the youth of Japan will take to heart the examples of Majisuka Gakuen and take more control of their lives, especially the young women.

UPDATED: Majisuka Gakuen 2
Mina's First Impression
Now that the first episode has been subbed, and I've watched the second I think we have a pretty good grasp of what to expect. The first episode seemed a lot more over the top than the beginning of last season, so I expect more humor worked into this season. I kind of liked the fact that it wasn't all just jokes, but more serious considering it a drama starring idols. However, I got a bit tired of all the seriousness. I actually like the opening, but I've gone over all that. I do expect more characters to be introduced because there are a quite a few prominent members, of at least AKB, that have yet to be incorporated into the current storyline. Plus, there is a high probability that they might want to work in one or two NMB48 members. I didn't care for how Akimoto reworked Yuko back into the plot, but it might make more sense when I watch the second episode with subtitles. One improvement that I've noticed it that more references have been worked in (AKB48, Star Wars, Michael Jackson). One improvement that I am hoping to see return is better action scenes. I don't expect it to be on the same level as Crows Zero, but I thought Yuko and Atsuko did a good job with their stunts. Even watching the behind the scenes, some of Yuko's fighting looked like it connected. I, of course, don't like the idea of Matsui Jurina "Center" beating anyone. Mayu's (Nezumi) and Tomo's (Shibuya) fight scene was poor in my opinion. The concept was good and suited her character, but when you do slow motion fight sequences it requires higher quality. I'm sorry spitting gum in someone's face and slapping hands in front of another's face. . . what was that. It seems like no one can give a good fight, one punch is all it takes.
Wait She Was Who?
I thought I could do some of the principle characters that have been introduced already, there were a lot. Besides, the first post of this sort is, to my surprise, popular. I would love if you guys did, at least, take a look because it took me a while to produce it.

Tanabe Miku "Jumbo"
Team K
18 years old
- It seems her hobby is 'wild ideas'.

Mina: She is perfection, I miss the Phrase Museum corner on AKB because of her.
Kojima Haruna "Torigoya"
Team A
23 years old
- She dropped out of high school because the school had restrictions that did not allow students to be a part of the entertainment industry.
- Often has sexy, usually bathing suit or lingerie photo-shoots.
- Is Oshima Yuko's main target of affection.
- Would of rather joined Morning Musume than AKB48.

SDN48
22 years old
- Her hobby is sleeping (LOL)
- Has been a popular member in both AKB48 and SDN48.
- Was transfered to help form SDN during the team shuffle of AKB.
Mina: I like Yukari, but I do think SDN fits her image better than AKB, even though she is younger than some of the current AKB members.
Uchida Mayumi "Jyanken"
Team K
17 years old
- Won the Jyanken tournament and became the center for 'Chance no Junban'.
- Made Undergirls for AKB's 20th single, before she was at Theatre girl status.
- After winning the tournament she became a media darling and now is associated with Rock-Paper-Scissors (she plays it in another artist's pv).
- It was reported in a tabloid that there are "various rumors about her excessive night amusements". . . LOL

- Her favorite food is gyoza.
- She was included in the senbatsu of the last two singles, and has been included in AKB48's Undergirls.

Now that the first episode has been subbed, and I've watched the second I think we have a pretty good grasp of what to expect. The first episode seemed a lot more over the top than the beginning of last season, so I expect more humor worked into this season.
Maeda Atsuko
Team A
19 years old
- Is starring in a film that will be released this year
- Is releasing a solo single this June

- Is disliked by many AKB48 fans because of her continued presence in AKB48 even though she is a member of SKE48.

- Is good at tennis.
Mina: She kind of fits my opinion of most of the trainees -- that they are really well polished and have potential. - Close with Kojima Haruna, and likes to touch women's breasts.
Mina: I've always liked her, but I've been turned off ever since I put two and two together. She was deathly afraid of balloons in an episode of AKBingo! but in videos posted in a member's blog show her popping balloons with Kuramochi Asuka.
