SDN48's Yuuwaku No Garter Stage Reaction

This performance that I watched is from the Revival Concert series that took place last summer.  I've loved and hated SDN48.  My hope is that Dream Morning Musume will become what I wanted from SDN48.  I'm sad to see them go, but their last two singles feel like they gave up.  May I just say the whole AV-sounding overture reminds me why I'm not too depressed about them being disbanded.  The sad thing is that this stage reminds me why I like them.  This is the first time I watched the entire concert.

Saturday Night Party
This is a pretty standard opening number.  It isn't something I would want to listen over and over again, but it doesn't make my ears bleed.  The girls do a wonderful job of performing it.  The choreography is okay; I would like to have a word with the person that thought that jazz dance move looked good.  I did not think I was watching a middle school dance recital.  Take a note from SKE48, only highlight technical dancing when it is somewhat impressive.  How long is this song?  I guess I like the glamour costumes.

Never!
That was an adorable opening verse.  This would be a better opening number in my opinion.  It has that same vibe, but better.  I'm going to shoot some camera people!  Who gave the okay for an up dress shot?  The performance aspect is good, but the dancing (sigh).

Black Boy
I love this song.  There is better dancing and pants!  I need to look up a translation in hope to figure out what they mean by 'black boy' because they do have Black people.

[I'm skipping the random single songs included in the concert just because they aren't usually included in the setlist, as far as I'm aware.]

Yuuwaku No Garter
Here is the infamous unit that the stage is named after.  Here I am okay with overt sexuality because of the content of the song.  Just like how I am okay with sex scenes or nudity in films, just need a legitimate reason for including it.  Off go the garters = yeah fan service.  I sang along because I liked it.

I'm sure.
You guys probably know this from a shuffle unit with Shinoda Mariko and Kojima Haruna.  "Can I get a kiss?" (say yes!) "Oh My Gaw" (giggle that is not the right answer).  The Engrish isn't too bad, but I would of written it a bit different, and then there are times I don't know if they are speaking in English or Japanese.  "Are you ready to do it?" (that was forward)  "Anytime" (woah).  Why do the lesbians have to wear frumpy costumes?  I have to say the units thus far are all pretty strong when it comes to the music.

All In
I think Nonti looks hotter in a dress.  This reminds me of the '80s.  This is probably my least favorite unit for this stage.  It would of been better if they were all in Men's wear for women and didn't do the whole female/male role thing because most of them look sexy in those outfits.  They did that jazz dance thing again. . . I made a face like this:

Jajauma Lady
Yes it is CINDY's unit!  Cindy pulls off the cowgirl hat wonderfully, work it!  MOE~ Cindy is totally stealing all of my attention.  The one in dark blue is probably my second favorite.  Oh they brought out a whip.  Are you making this dirty?  That is not what you do at the beginning of a dance section!  Humping the stage is not allowed. . . they're going to try to be sexy and look like idiots aren't they?  And that is an affirmative.

Ganbarina
I like the combination of latin influence and the sound of a live musical.  Instead of a dance section they are doing 'hey look what I can do' part.  Sparkles.  I'm done with this song.  It has a nice chorus and all, but it is receptive to say the least.  (but there are sparkles and shiny boots)

Futsuu No Anata
I was surprised how much I like this song.  Now look surprised.  Performances are ten times better when they look like they are having fun.  This made me smile.

Best by・・・
Ghostbusters anyone?  Cat fight!  There goes the running man.  I may be kidding around, but I do like this song and performance.  I just don't have much to say at the moment.

Aisareru Tame Ni
Oh dear lord.  You are going to make me cry that sounds beautiful.  I'm getting goosebumps.  I'm going to take all of solo shots for this!  Crap, now I am even more disappointed they didn't release an amazing ballad for a single.  FUCK NONTI!  Why didn't this get in the Top 100!  I'm never going to see them live.  I can't believe you did this to me.

Kodoku Na Runner
Favorite song!  You guys are so much better than some of those K-Pop groups that come to Japan.  They release basically the same product, but you guys have this amazing stage.  Plus, you guys aren't all under 120 pounds.  Stupid After School and their Rambling Girls looks and sounds like your first four singles and you had better lyrics than 'la la la we are rambling girls'.  There is female empowerment for you!

Touhikou
And we have someone who is Chinese, who knew.  Why is the encore always the best part of stages?  I adore the deep vocals.  It is something that isn't as common in AKB.  Great, now I don't want them to disband.  I would buy their album if it had more songs like the ones in their stage combined with the A-sides (and maybe some B-sides) from their singles.

Vampire Keikaku
Is it just me or is this a little upbeat for a song with Vampire in the title.  I don't mind pelvic thrusting if vampire are involved.  The vampires are quite happy.

Why SDN48 'Failed'

No matter how much fans, myself included, complain about Akimoto, I think we all know he is brilliant.  So when I heard he was planning to disband SDN48 I was disappointed, but I trust his judgement.  He gave AKB48 an end date too, therefore I don't think it is only money on his mind.  I think he wants to have some quality; he does write all of their lyrics.  We can then look past the fact that they were doing fine sales-wise.  My guess is that he didn't see them going anywhere.  We can clearly see SKE and NMB's sales increasing.  However, I blame the not as stellar sales on the production of the group.  AKB48 is popular because it is liked by both men and women and from a variety of age groups.  AKB was a conversation starter for me when talking to Japanese people.  (When a maid was leading me to the cafe we talked about AKB48 and our oshi.)  It is obvious that this group is not targeted towards a female audience.  Let's take a look at their last single.  It is some women in sexy outfits surrounding some old guy like this is a hostess club.  I'm not going to buy that.  I don't care how much I like this group; this is by far the worst single they've put out.  The PV preview from AKBingo! disgusted me so much I didn't watch the whole thing.  Not even if Cindy was the center would I grab a copy.

I thought a more adult girl group was a wonderful concept.  For one it pushes the age boundary for women in the entertainment industry.  I did really enjoy all of their singles thus far.  (The B-sides were sometimes a bit much.)  I definitely liked their stage. They were, unfortunately, pushed as an adult (wink, wink) group.  They appeared in lingerie or naked a lot, which isn't wrong in itself it is how it is done.  Plus, don't do it that much.  Keep it classy because it is coming off a bit desperate.

All I wanted was a single of them just having fun and not being overtly sexual.  You can be sexy without being in my face about it.  Don't take it personally, Hyuna sucks balls at it.  You were funny and playful about it (the whole elbow thing was nice).  They could of done something like Perfume: them just walking about in fashionable attire.  They could of done an OL PV.  A pervert gives a little love tap on one of their butts at work, she punches him in the face, and they break out in song.  The girls can be funny, cute, or sexy. WHY!  I would of just upped and quit as soon as I heard the concept of this upcoming single.  These girls could of attracted a way hotter guy than that, besides why can't each of them have a harem of sexy male strippers?

PV Reviews 110822

Here is a girlicious PV review post.  It features AKB48, SDN48, new idol group Fairies, Super Girls, and a bit of K-Pop.  If you don't know, on YouTube I follow Eat Your Kimchi which reviews requested K-Pop videos every Monday.  Well I requested for Teen Top's recent music video, and they did it.  I suggest you check it out.  I am kind of glad that this is mainly a J-Idol blog because my impression from various comments among other things that K-Idol fans on the internet are pretty vicious.  (I have an impression of Japanese male wota as a bit stalker-ish because of all the scandals caused by them digging up trash about idols.)  I digress, lets get to it.  UPDATE: My computer and Blogger are being glitchy.  My videos that I've embedded keep on disappearing (and it has varied).  I'm going to give it a little break and fix it later.  Sorry about that.

To give you guys some perspective, I adore Nine Muses' song No Playboy.  I wasn't so thrilled with this one, both the song and the video.  It has the typical K-Idol format of some dance and close up shots.  They did play with the lighting and had more variation than more prominent groups like Girls Generation, but you need to do more than that.  What sold this video enough to get another star is the lighting in some of the shots, especially the close up with the black background and rainbow spots of light.  I just don't respond well to a lack of creativity.
☆☆☆

I hated their first couple of singles, I loved the single before this, and I like this one.  This reminds me of Hello Project and some of their old silly songs with a disco feel.  I love that they add the playful elements of cosplay.
☆☆☆☆

What is with these new, young idol groups that have major artists backing them and only have one (at least less than half of the group) singing.  I appreciate the mainstream feel to their production and the better dancing and all but can they actually all sing?  This is the only preview, but because of Happiness, I am not prepared to be surprised.  (Three dance shots.)
☆☆

I hate the song, but the music video is really good!  I love the color combinations used in the dance shots.  The storyline shot is playful.
☆☆☆☆

Oh god the English!  Nothing was wrong, but not believable.  Well, I got my club/ bar PV but the girls all look really trashy.  I mean if they were on the curb I would think they were prostitutes.  There are good elements to it.  Hey at least their dancing isn't more provocative than Hyuna's.  I'm all for women taking charge and having active sex lives (guys do it and no one thinks of it), but could we clean it up a bit?

I was a bit concerned that it was too hyped, especially after just watching the short version because it seemed basic.  The action was basic and it was basically only two shots: dance shot and storyline shot.  What I've learned from K-Pop teasers is that the teaser's impression has little to do with the full version (often disappointing).  However, after getting off of my shift at Coldstone I watched this masterpiece with glee.  The direction and cinematography is amazing.  If only I was a fan of old kung fu films because I wonder how it compares.  The nice thing about AKB is that it seems the fans are incorporated in most things they do.  It revolves around the relationship between Maeda and Oshima.  I am thrilled they went all out with the theme.  The song is brought in in the main fight scenes which doesn't feel disjointed but part of the rising to the climax.  The stage and costumes for the dance shot are wonderful.  It was the potential of this PV which sold me on importing a physical copy, and I do not regret it.  There is still room for improvement though.  I wish the big dance section was more difficult because the choreography is anticlimactic when matched to the instrumental.  I would of also liked for the other members to have stronger fighting scenes, they seemed almost minion-level weak.  The conclusion was touching.
☆☆☆☆☆

I was expecting something sexier because of the happy title track and the center.  However, with the variation in members I thought this was a great idea.  To pull this off in one continuous shot is impressive.  The little mistakes and mannerisms are endearing.  It isn't my favorite Undergirls' PV, but I approve.
 ☆☆☆☆

This is basically shots from the second season of Majisuka Gakuen cut together with behind the scenes clips.  I go easy of their third song PVs because most groups only release one PV per single, but they release four.  The video has good pacing with the slow song.  I would of liked to see a larger proportion of behind the scenes video.
☆☆☆☆

I was expecting at least close-up shots, possibly a dance shot.  However, I do like the storyline that they decided to go with: pay it forward.  Basically Eguchi Aimi does something nice for Acchan and then Acchan does something sweet for Oshima, and it continues on.
☆☆☆
Hey, AKB has schoolgirls and SDN has hostesses.  I do find some hostess characters annoying.  I do like the idea that they have a song about drinking, but I would of preferred a club song or a rock-edge at a bar.  I like the dance shot and some of the characters in the story-shot.  Plus, they have Cindy!  (It helps that I like the song.)

UPDATED: MOAR from the AKB family! + PVs

After the great news that Maeda Atsuko would have her first leading role in a film and release a solo single, I bet you are all pumped to see her have the lead for the Hana Kimi remake.  I've been wishing that they make a live-action adaption of Ouran High School Host Club (which they are), plus this!  AKB48 are reaching now to surpass Mr. Children in record sales; they surpassed a million copies on their second day.  This makes dealing with haters so much more worth it.  The opening theme will be AKB's 22nd single, but that isn't too surprising considering Acchan has a guaranteed spot in the top 5.  However, if she isn't center would that be weird. . . Anyway, there is even better news for AKB48 fans: Tojima Hana and Komatani Hitomi will be joining SDN48!!!!!

With all SDN's recent graduations, things weren't looking too good.  (You tend to get people that graduate early on, but still you hope they aren't jumping ship.)  They are both first generation members.  Tojima is very popular with overseas fans, like myself.

I'm under a bit of a time constraint with working, and me leaving on Monday.  So, I will just post some recent PVs and I'll try to review them later and update this post.

The outfits are cute, but I don't like the bubbles.  The close-up and dance-shot backgrounds are cute.  I didn't understand the point to the six part shots at the beginning.  So, I actually would prefer it if they did less editing, because the things they did looked cheap.  The jump shots and props were fun.  Except for some of the editing, this was a good Hello Project PV.  Typical Hello Project PVs: studio-only, dance shot+ close up shot, and no creativity (except for the girls making cute faces).

The costumes really suit DiVA, but the pants for the silver. . . do not approve.  I do appreciate them doing a different angle (birds-eye ish), but I didn't love it.  I'm not usually a fan of black-figures but with the dancing it turned out well.  Now what were they holding, that made them switch outfits?  The night-time setting matched the song, but them holding something that glows didn't have a point to it.

This is only one shot out of a PV, but I posted it anyway.  I'll just leave some comments.  I love the fact that they are doing something different and Mano looks great outside!  See what a change of setting and moving camera can do.  I wouldn't even mind that much if this was the entire PV.

Perfume always does a fabulous job.  I love the concept of taking pictures and making them coming alive by replacing them with video.

Oh god.  When I saw the outfits I was concerned.  The problem with these is that they aren't flattering.  It flattens their chest and highlights curves in a negative way.  These only suit those who are tall and thin.  It made Risako's boobs smaller.  I don't like the changing colors and heart shapes.  Changing colors always look cheap to me; I hate it when people use them in opv and amv.  Some of the dancing is vulgar in my opinion.  The bike shots looked bad.  I do like the sectioned screens during the dance shots.  I did like having the girls dance in front of a screen of their close-up shot, it reminded me of concerts.  However, I didn't like the single close-ups on the screen during the dance-shot.

Very pretty.

I don't like the crystals and the mini poles at the front of the dance shot.  The short blonde hair isn't good on Takahashi.  Niigaki's hair finally looks good, but they still need to work on styling Aika's.  The group still shot looks odd with all the extra props.  I do not understand all the crystals.  If they took away all the extras I would like it more.  Adding doesn't make it better.  The girls look pretty and I prefer the white on white over the purple and red sets.  I would prefer a different oufit on different colors.  I just don't think they look as good.  Besides it is the same set with different color curtains.  They should of mixed up the outfits a bit more than 9th gen has shorts.  This didn't make me like the song than I already did.

I don't like any of the guys, or the song that much.  I do like the variety of shots, angles, outfits, and pans.

Why are they at a foreign college?  I guess a lot of people travel abroad but. . . I don't like the bimbo cheerleaders.  I like the close up shorts of them singing and some of the group shots outside, but I'm not sure about anything else.

I'm not a huge fan of this single.  I find the contrast between the new and old backgrounds odd.  There were quite a couple of things that confused me.  However the dance shot and the close-ups were good.  Why is Yukirin keep on trying to seduce me?  Nice, in Aki-cha's temptress shot she just twirled. . . very sexy.  They are pretty adorable.

I like the positive messages.

Little trivia, but they didn't finish filming this PV because of the earthquake, which is too bad because I love everything about this PV.  Perfume is just perfection.  I adore the orange accents and the flowing fabric.  You don't need to over-edit, or tons of different things to make a good PV.

UPDATED: Majisuka Gakuen 2

Mina's First Impression
Now that the first episode has been subbed, and I've watched the second I think we have a pretty good grasp of what to expect.  The first episode seemed a lot more over the top than the beginning of last season, so I expect more humor worked into this season.  I kind of liked the fact that it wasn't all just jokes, but more serious considering it a drama starring idols.  However, I got a bit tired of all the seriousness.  I actually like the opening, but I've gone over all that.  I do expect more characters to be introduced because there are a quite a few prominent members, of at least AKB, that have yet to be incorporated into the current storyline.  Plus, there is a high probability that they might want to work in one or two NMB48 members.  I didn't care for how Akimoto reworked Yuko back into the plot, but it might make more sense when I watch the second episode with subtitles.  One improvement that I've noticed it that more references have been worked in (AKB48, Star Wars, Michael Jackson).  One improvement that I am hoping to see return is better action scenes.  I don't expect it to be on the same level as Crows Zero, but I thought Yuko and Atsuko did a good job with their stunts.  Even watching the behind the scenes, some of Yuko's fighting looked like it connected.  I, of course, don't like the idea of Matsui Jurina "Center" beating anyone.  Mayu's (Nezumi) and Tomo's (Shibuya) fight scene was poor in my opinion.  The concept was good and suited her character, but when you do slow motion fight sequences it requires higher quality.  I'm sorry spitting gum in someone's face and slapping hands in front of another's face. . . what was that.  It seems like no one can give a good fight, one punch is all it takes.

Wait She Was Who?
I thought I could do some of the principle characters that have been introduced already, there were a lot.  Besides, the first post of this sort is, to my surprise, popular.  I would love if you guys did, at least, take a look because it took me a while to produce it.

Maeda Atsuko
Team A
19 years old
- Is starring in a film that will be released this year
- Is releasing a solo single this June
- Considered the face of AKB48
- Known to be introverted, but sincere when it comes to her performances
Mina: I think we are a lot alike when it comes to personality and has been a long time favorite.  She releases great photobooks.
Watanabe Mayu "Nezumi"
Team B
16 years old
- Considered to resemble a cyborg
- A huge anime otaku
- She is aiming to take the number one spot in the general elections
- She will be releasing her first solo photobook.
- Member of sub group Watarirouka Hashiritai
Mina: I like her, but she is not a favorite.  I prefer her last two stage units over Pajama Drive.
Matsui Jurina "Center"
Team S
14 years old
- Is disliked by many AKB48 fans because of her continued presence in AKB48 even though she is a member of SKE48.
- Pushed heavily by Akimoto, but only ranked 10th in last year's general elections (she was ranked lower during the preliminary results, lower than fellow SKE member Matsui Rena).
Mina: Clearly I am not biased at all towards her.

Sashihara Rino "Wota"
Team A
18 years old
- Known to be a fan of idols, and frequents Maid Cafes
- Has been pushed by Akimoto, especially since she made senbatsu in the last election
- Has her own TV program
- Shows affection to members, especially Lovetan
- Is a member of the subgroup Not Yet
Mina: She had impressed me in her units while in Team B, but caught my full attention after her episode of AKB600.
Takajo Aki "Akicha"
Team A
19 years old
- Was the fastest promoted trainee in AKB48 (performed in the concert shuffle 'Faint' even before being promoted).
- Has rose in position at about the same time as Sashihara, and they currently share a stage unit in A6 (were Undergirls in 2009 but became senbatsu in 2010).
- Member of the sub group French Kiss
Mina: I like her for her unique looks, well more than that but that stood out to me even before she was promoted.
Kitahara Rie "Unagi"
Team B
19 years old
- Has been in senbatsu since 'Oogoe Diamond'
- Member of sub group Not Yet
Mina: I like her, but I had trouble of thinking of facts about her. . . so I guess that says something.

Komori Mika "Mukuchi"
Team B
16 years old
- Was included in senbatsu for 'Namida Surprise!' while still a trainee
- Was the only AKB48 trainee to be given a major role in the first season of Majisuka Gakuen
- Known to be slow and to have an odd personality, it shows in her dancing.
Mina: I like her a lot and she surprised me in her B5 unit, but I miss her being mute in her role on Majisuka Gakuen.
Moeno Nito "Bungy"
Team K
18 years old
- Has only been included in senbatsu for 'Namida Surprise!' (like Komori)
- Flipped the bird during Team K's PV included as a coupling track for 'Chance no Junban'.
Mina: She is kind of a bad ass.
Oba Mina "Toshima"
Team 4
19 years old
- Was included in the mass promotion of trainees (9th Gen), but has yet to be assigned to a team.
Mina: I get the feeling that there is a potential pairing with her and Miori.

Shimada Haruka "Docchi"
Team 4
18 years old
- Is good at tennis.
Mina: She kind of fits my opinion of most of the trainees -- that they are really well polished and have potential.  I am starting to think I wouldn't mind AKB going over the 48 limit because I would like to see them in teams and units with the older members.  Plus, consider the age of most of these girls.

Shimazaki Haruka "Kanburi"
Team 4
17 years old
Mina: I like her nickname. . . (Paruru)

Yamauchi Suzuran "Tsuri"
Team 4
16 years old
Mina: I Ranran so much!
Ichikawa Miori "Lemon"
Team 4
- Even though she has not been promoted to be a member yet, she has regular appearances on AKBingo! (like every week now).
- She is infamous for her catchphrase, which translates to 'I want to become a fresh lemon'.
- She has a high pitched voice and often says 'Waah'
Mina: She is incredibly popular among my friends, even those who aren't interested in AKB.  I wouldn't be surprised if she made rank in the upcoming general election.
Katayama Haruka "Showa"
Team A
20 years old
- Known for her strong vocals, for example her special talent is the ability to harmonize in any song.
- She carries around a book with her where she makes notes if she thinks of something funny to say during an MC; she also carries arounds sweets because she becomes anxious without them.
- Was included in two coupling songs for the single Beginner (MINT and Undergirls)
Mina: She has made my top ten.  I recommend you watch this.

Nakaya Sayaka "Anime"
Team A
19 years old
- She is known as an otaku and used to perform with glasses (I miss them).
- Her future ambition is to become a seiyuu.
- She was an original Team B member (actually this whole set was).
Mina: I was a big fan when she first debut with Team B because she wore glasses, but she recently stuck out to me during the dating sim because she was impossibly cute.
Tanabe Miku "Jumbo"
Team K
18 years old
- It seems her hobby is 'wild ideas'.
- Isn't that popular.
Mina: I like her because of her unit in B4, but she hasn't really fond a way to improve her popularity.  She may just not be an ace, which is fine but it makes me feel a bit bad for her.
Yonezawa Rumi "Rice"
Team K
19 years old
- Last years she released both a photobook and a solo calendar (I think both were her first time).
- It seems her hobbies are 'movie appreciation, and being deeply moved'.
Mina: I like her and I think it was about time she released a photobook considering how sexy she is.
Kuramochi Asuka "Kokabuki"
Team A
21 years old
- Is a member of the subgroup French Kiss
- Has an ear fetish
- Has been included in senbatsu on and off; she will be in AKB48's upcoming 21st single.
Mina: . . . I don't want to say that I just like her because I'm a DD with exceptions.  It is entertaining that she has an ear fetish.
Kasai Tomomi "Ookabuki"
Team B
- Known to be a princess/ spoiled.
- She is an extremely cute character.
- Her B5 unit, where she is center, was voted to the number fifteen spot in this year's Top 100.
- Has a couple of pairing, the most well known is her relationship with Itano Tomomi (it is said that they have matching rings).
Mina: Has always been a favorite of mine.
Miyazawa Sae "Youran"
Team K
20 years old
- Known as the 'Handsome Idol' -- she is the tomboy of the group
- Has an extreme amount of energy, which will sometimes get on other member's nerves.
- Close with other popular members like Maeda Atsuko and Akimoto Sayaka.
- Member of the subgroup DiVA.
Mina: She has been one of my top favorites for a while and she should of won her episodes of DANSO.
Minegishi Minami "Shaku"
Team K
18 years old
- Known to be one of the strongest dancers in AKB48.
- Is energetic and strong variety idol characteristics
- Member of the subgroup No Sleeves

Mina: I've ranked her as my favorite of AKB because there is nothing I dislike about her.
Yokoyama Yui "President"
Team K
18 years old
- Was recently promoted to be a member of Team K to replace Ono Erena.
- Been pushed by Akimoto significantly since she her promotion.
- Her character in MG reflects that fact that she is from Kyoto.
- Her favorite country is America.
- Enjoys strolling and visiting bookstores
- Member of the subgroup Not Yet
Mina: Has increased in my rankings since I watched the first episode of MG2. . . and after I looked up her trivia.
Matsui Rena "Chuukara"
Team S
19 years old
- Has moved up from Undergirl position to senbatsu since she appeared in last season.
- Her future ambition is to become an actress.
