Mina's Top Ten Female Idols/ Groups Ranking & Explanation
I tend to get good feedback when I do explanations for my rankings, and I wanted to post something. If there is a subject you want me to weigh in on let me know. I'm always looking for something to talk about. The reason I'm not including guys in this is because boy bands can be a little inconsistent. The majority I only care for their singles. Arashi and Super Junior are probably my top two, but I haven't heard much from Super Junior and Arashi hasn't been as good since 2010. Arashi, seriously what happened to those amazing singles. (Their most recent album had some great songs, but really lacking when it came to hit singles.)
I think you guys will enjoy this because I explain why I like who I like. I hope you find someone new that you like. I tend to find being called 'biased' offensive because I don't follow groups based on looks or the members. For me if I don't like the music then it is really hard for me to follow a group. Personality and looks help, but I don't listen to music for their personality.
1. AKB48
Why do I like AKB48 so much? There are a lot of factors that play into it, but the main reason is that I enjoy a significant amount of their music. The fact that they release so much, through singles, subgroups, and stages, likely increases the probability that I'll like some of it. I also adore the variety in styles. Yes, the majority is standard Pop, which is perfectly fine by my book, they also have songs that incorporate Rock and Hip-Hop. Akimoto went through a little latin phase (Team A's 6th Stage). I have a wide range of music I enjoy (from Nicki Minaj to Florence + the Machine, and so on). Plus, a lot of the songs have nice lyrics. They've also challenge themselves creatively. Even their earlier singles had captivating promotional videos and choreography. They are using their popularity to their advantage by working with some amazing artists and directors for their releases. I'm looking forward to see how the new lyricists will do. (If you haven't heard, Akimoto is hiring people to help him write music.) With new influences coming in I hope to see the music develop.
When I consider the interesting concept of 'a classroom' and watching the girls develop (Akimoto's CNN interview), I can overlook that some of the members aren't as talented as I would like them to be. This is a major negative to me. It also hurts the group because there are some strong vocalists, but the weaker members make them look bad. Another thing that makes up for that is the range in members. They have different personalities, and looks; there is pretty much someone for everyone.
2. Brown Eyed Girls
Brown Eyed Girls are quite different than AKB48, which is probably why I am tempted to put them on top. First off, the fact that they have members who are in their mid-twenties to thirties is lovely. The entertainment industry in a lot of countries, especially for women, is very youth-orientated. They are likely the most talented K-Pop, female, idol group. They are the perfect kind of sexy. (Confident and powerful sexy, not look-at-me and buy-my-music sexy.) Both their singles and solo work tend to be spectacular. My issue with them is, besides their singles, I don't like their music all too much. Also, they don't release music all too often. However, that is mostly the 'comeback' system in their industry's fault. So basically, they are more talented than AKB48, equal in personality, but AKB48 has more music that I like. However, the songs that I do like are so superb that they beat out SKE48 (who also have more songs that I like than BEG).
3. SKE48
I have similar reasons why I like SKE48 compared to AKB48, not unexpected since they have the same concept. What surprised me was how different stylistically they are. Their singles often make me imagine a lake or some body of water. They also tend to be more energetic dancers, this might be a Team S thing though. SKE48's members have a different look compared to AKB48. I really recommend watching their Zepp Nagoya (042910) and (122509) concerts; after I watched those I became a big fan. They lack a variety show like AKBingo!, which is why I don't know their names or personalities well. They've also improved the last couple of years.
4. Perfume
I don't blog much about Perfume. I don't have anything interesting to say about them. I believe they are the definition of idols. They seem perfect at all times, and reflect an ideal for women. They also follow the guideline of being popular. Perfume also has a good chance of continued long-term success, which is usually limited to male units. Perfume's musical style, while unique, isn't my favorite. I love it in the same way I love Enya. It isn't exactly party music or something I would listen to often, but it is relaxing and enjoyable.
5. NMB48
I had some trouble deciding where to place NMB48 on this ranking. Their singles have been good, but nothing outstanding. The members are surprising, considering how new they are to the industry, good performers. I originally placed it lower, but then I considered their stage. If you don't recall, I raved about their first stage. This is partly due to AKB and SKE's debut stages weren't as good, in my opinion. I can also see the Osaka flavor. I didn't care for the song or PV for Oh My God!, however their performance made me like the song. I think that is a good quality. It was a really bland song, but they were so adorable. They made me associate the two together. Now I actually want to listen to the song.
6. Morning Musume
You know how I said the main reason I love AKB is because of their music, that is what is hurting my interest in Morning Musume. After viewing the PV for Renai Hunter, I've decided that I like the 10th generation. (not as much as 9th gen.) Plus, with Takahashi and Niigaki gone I adore all the members. So, idol-wise they are in a great spot. (there is a concern about talent because as far as I know Reina is the only strong vocalist, but I don't know about 9th and 10th gen.) They just need to be more consistent with releases (that I like). Renai Hunter was in the right direction. (still want something more on the level of 10 MY ME and Maji Desu Ka Ska.) I'm still hanging on because it wasn't too long ago from when I really enjoyed their releases. Although, I'm impatient so I'm getting sick of waiting and disappointment.
7. Tokyo Girls Style
I wasn't expecting much after their debut single, but they've done an amazing job thus far. Their singles and albums have been good or better. I like how they infuse the typical idol sound with other genres. Keep it up ladies.
8. Kyary Pamyu Pamyu
Kyary had me at hello. I find her singles addicting, but I wouldn't love them as much without the packaging. Her PVs are spectacular. Each one is different, but you see common imagery. Kyary is not the most talented idol walking around vocally or in terms of music. Excluding her singles, I don't care for her songs. Her selling point is her concepts and creativity. She knows how to sell it, and that is why I am always at the edge of my seat waiting for a new single.
9. Chocolat
I know this may piss off K-Pop fans when I've ranked this rookie group higher than most major groups like SNSD, Kara, and 2NE1. I just like them better. Their singles have been improving. The fact that three members are biracial interests me. Their dance practice videos are fun to watch. I enjoy their performances. Chocolat, especially my favorite Melanie, has strong vocals. I root for them. They also have the best English version for a Korean song that I've heard. (I think SNSD's sucked.)
10. Fairies
This is another rookie group, but from Japan. They could surpass some of the above groups if they divided up the singing more. I reject the E-girl groups because only two or three members sing when they have like seven members. On that point, they've been improving. Their dancing is wonderful. I also adore most of their singles. I also love their professional image. (older groups could perform in the same clothes.)
Honorable Mention: Super Girls, C-ute, BiS, Momoiro Clover Z, 2NE1, and Kara.

AKB48 - GIVE ME FIVE Audio + Info
I know I don't usually do these kind of things, so also don't expect this to become a common occurrence. I just have more time on my hands since it is winter break. Although, I shouldn't be because I have tons of paperwork to get done because I will be studying abroad next year. (I'll be in Nagoya so I'm going to spend some quality time with SKE48.) I also wanted to do this because I'm excited, as usual, for AKB48's upcoming single. I think it is really catchy and I immediately liked it, which doesn't usually happen. Plus, it was quite different than what people were expecting. People are left guessing as to why. Akimoto might be doing away with the pattern because it is too predictable. He might be sick of writing slow graduation/ sakura singles. Some fans have hypothesized that five members are graduating. (The only problem with that theory is that they would likely announce it at a concert ahead of time in order to promote sales of those member's last single.) We can tell from the tracklist that he is trying something new, which is thrilling (well for me at least so I guess it is working).
However, I'm not planning on grabbing a copy. First of all I would need to wait until I heard some previews for the special girl units. Special Girls A looks to be a cute song, reminiscent of past Undergirls tracks. Special Girls B is a little more up in the air. It could be cool, sexy, sporty, or maybe a ballad. They have many of the stronger vocalists. The title translates to The Shepherd's Travels. My guess is a ballad. Both look promising so I don't know which copy I would want. Besides I'm on a budget being in college and all. I tend to only make one seasonal purchase and that was SKE48's upcoming single. (I would leave a link so you can indulge as well but the pre-orders are all sold out! I am so happy I got one when I did.) I'm hoping I can get enough points from people using my links this month. If it does happen I might splurge. Then again, there is a pretty looking photobook (besides Matsui Rena's) of AKB48 members wearing glasses. I LOVE IDOLS IN GLASSES! (Why do you think Mii-chan is my oshi. . . okay that's not the reason but it is a plus.) Or I could grab NMB48's upcoming single.

Upcoming Releases (There is Girl on Girl Action)
The one brilliant thing about the time difference is that I can wake up with wonderful news in the morning. It started off with the HEY!x3 Special where NMB, SKE, and No3b promoted their upcoming singles. It wasn't until I saw Melos No Michi's post about SKE48 that I started spazzing out. Unfortunately the news clip that previewed a lot of the PV has been put on private, but I hunted another one down.

Now NMB48 has also been impressing me with their choreography. Notice the lift they did 30 seconds into the performance. I kind of want to look into their ages since I find they are presented sexier than SKE48. It might be due to Osaka's flavor.

Fairies has improved in my mind. I know it is only one more member that is doing most of the singing, but the other members do have some lines which is more than I can say for Happiness. They are turing out to be a dance-version of Tokyo Girls Style (who has better vocals). I'm curious to see if these groups lasts considering the shelf life of units like SweetS.
The final performance that caught my eye was No Sleeves (No3b). I didn't love the song when I saw the PV, but it has grown on me. Did I mention that the limited editions come with posters; I love posters.

You Cannot Resit Love
Mina is right, there have been many big events lately, just in the 48 universe, which is all I can manage to keep up with. While I have always enjoyed the important posts Mina has provided us all, I hope no one will begrudge her the time to attend to her studies and health properly. I certainly can do more to write for this blog. It has been more than a month since I last posted and I have at least one exciting event I personally attended before returning to the US and A.
I don't think I've mentioned it here before, but I had, until this spring, been actively trying to avoid even looking at SKE48. This has been difficult as my favorite Majisuka Gakuen character was portrayed by the SKE star Matsui Rena. When SKE48 did their own drama, Mousou Deka, my resolve began to crumble and I watched that delightful drama, which deserves an entry of its own. My resolve crumbled further as the other SKE star Matsui Jurina did such a wonderful job as the side-kick to my god Watanabe Mayu in Majisuka Gakuen 2. I was done for when Kimoto Kanon stabbed Gekikara as Miso.
While I made my pilgrimage to the AKB48 theater and saw AKB48 perform at the Tokyo Dome City Hall and Seibu Dome when in Japan this summer, I also watched SKE48 perform at the Zepp Nagoya and attended my first handshake event on my last day in Japan. This event was for SKE48 and in Nagoya. When I got up on the morning of my last full day in Japan I did not know what I was going to do, but I vaguely remembered SKE might have an event. I had bought their latest single, and I had a certificate for a handshake in it.
I had already been planning to spend my last day in Nagoya, so I quickly looked up where the event was and hopped on the Shinkansen as I had previously planned. Had I planned ahead better I would have made it to the even earlier, but as it was I missed a song or two of SKE's performance before the handshaking began.
After their performance, I sat in some shade and chatted with some local fans. Not so amazingly, two of them remembered seeing me at the Moss Burger before the Zepp Nagoya show we all attended (I am a caucasian and an inch or so taller than six feet). They told me how things worked and one fellow gave me a picture of Rena and Jurina he had multiple copies of.
Universally my experiences with meeting 48 fans in Japan have been nothing but positive. I am often asked if AKB or SKE are popular in the US and A and I have to inform them that no one really knows of them. The fans I met that day helped me understand what I needed to do to exchange my voucher to get a handshake ticket as we chatted about our favorites. They let me know all the tickets for Matsui Rena were already gone.
That was fine with me as the girl that stabbed Gekikara had quickly become a favorite of mine. I easily obtained a ticket to meet Kimoto Kanon. I had spent the entire summer studying Japanese and I was hopping to tell Non that I had traveled all the way from America just to meet her, but I am not very good at Japanese. The line moved too quickly and I had not yet figured out what I needed to say. I jabbered incomprehensibly and she smiled politely. She was waaaaaaaaay cuter in person. Her dimple was so amazingly pretty. The staff pushed me along so quickly that I had no chance to compose myself or recover. Miki Yakata was paired with Non and she spoke to me in English and said it was nice to meet me. I replied to her in English with what little coherence I had left.
Rather than buy more copies of the single to try and see Non again, I returned to downtown Nagoya, found my hotel and then set out to explore SKE related places. I had already visited the SKE48 shop in Shibuya, Tokyo. I washed up and went to explore SKE48's home. I went to their shop and took pictures of Nagoya before taking a disco
nap. I went clubbing at 1am and returned to my hotel at 5am to catch a little sleep before flying back to the US & A. While this might seem to be an exciting last night in Japan, and it was pretty good, I recommend looking for up to date information for the club scene. The clubs I tried to go to bore no resemblance to their on-line descriptions and were closed by the time I got there (as opposed to just starting to get going at 1am as I had read). So, despite having spent a year actively trying to ignore the existence of SKE48, the only members of the 48 family I have had the honor of touching have been members of SKE48. Kimoto Kanon is adorable beyond belief and able to be bone chillingly terrifying, as shown in Majisuka Gakuen. Now that I will be able to buy a Uchida Mayumi calendar finally, I find myself wanting more pictures and posters of Non to add to my small collection. I guess the lesson here is to always open your heart to love all of the angels of the 48 family of idols.
I don't think I've mentioned it here before, but I had, until this spring, been actively trying to avoid even looking at SKE48. This has been difficult as my favorite Majisuka Gakuen character was portrayed by the SKE star Matsui Rena. When SKE48 did their own drama, Mousou Deka, my resolve began to crumble and I watched that delightful drama, which deserves an entry of its own. My resolve crumbled further as the other SKE star Matsui Jurina did such a wonderful job as the side-kick to my god Watanabe Mayu in Majisuka Gakuen 2. I was done for when Kimoto Kanon stabbed Gekikara as Miso.While I made my pilgrimage to the AKB48 theater and saw AKB48 perform at the Tokyo Dome City Hall and Seibu Dome when in Japan this summer, I also watched SKE48 perform at the Zepp Nagoya and attended my first handshake event on my last day in Japan. This event was for SKE48 and in Nagoya. When I got up on the morning of my last full day in Japan I did not know what I was going to do, but I vaguely remembered SKE might have an event. I had bought their latest single, and I had a certificate for a handshake in it.
I had already been planning to spend my last day in Nagoya, so I quickly looked up where the event was and hopped on the Shinkansen as I had previously planned. Had I planned ahead better I would have made it to the even earlier, but as it was I missed a song or two of SKE's performance before the handshaking began.
After their performance, I sat in some shade and chatted with some local fans. Not so amazingly, two of them remembered seeing me at the Moss Burger before the Zepp Nagoya show we all attended (I am a caucasian and an inch or so taller than six feet). Mina's Ideal 24th Janken Tournament Result
Since it is all based on luck it is kind of fun to think how you would like it to go. Last time I thought that this would also decide Theatre-girls and Undergirls line-up too. Unfortunately that wasn't true because I was excited about seeing that too. We may get another set of team songs as the third tracks. While the result didn't change the typical senbatsu line-up, but it did give the girls plenty of screen time. Uchida, the winner, got a major role in Majisuka Gakuen and was all over the news when the result came out. They also were featured in AKB48 shows like AKBingo!, got to promote the single, and film the PV. This is an amazing opportunity for an unknown face to get a taste of the limelight. In the comments you can mention who your ideal senbatsu would be or at least the center.

The nice thing about this result is that higher senbatsu are relatively known members but none are, with the exception of Mariko-sama, media senbatsu. I was thinking something dark because Moeno is a bad-ass, Iwasa has some mad vocals, and Minegishi as a Team K member can play the cool role and can dance. Komori Mika also can be sexy and cool, as seen by her B5 unit. The perfect center would be Minegishi Minami. She is all about screen-time. What better thing than her winning center. Mina's PV (Preview) Reviews
This song is a perfect mix for Itano Tomomi. Because of her unique voice she can liven up a ballad, but her personality suits a dance track. The PV is mostly showing off Tomochin in a variety of looks. I like the muted color scheme, it reminds me of the same scheme using in Marie Antoinette. There is a variety of shots and angles, which keeps the video interesting. It sold me, so I would say that it is a good PV.

Those close up shots make me giggle, but I do like the dance shots. I'm not a fan of this group, just to let you know. The guys look so goofy during their storyline shots, but I do like that they added a storyline. Notice how the camera rarely isn't moving, this is always a good idea to make a good PV.

Another disclaimer: I haven't liked Kara since they hit Japanese shores. I don't like the barbie-esque look to this whole video. What is with the choreography towards the end of the chorus? I did enjoy the beach scenes, and the verses. Besides that, I could live without the Korean barbies and chorus.

First off if anyone is confused about the storyline and why the little girl becomes Acchan: there was never a little sister, it was always Acchan. I don't know how to explain it the best, but the little girl is not real. This PV is perfect for Acchan because it highlights her acting abilities by making her cry a lot. The whole supposed 'big-little sister relationship' is adorable. I wish the scene with all the pin wheels on the beach were a larger element because it matches the title. I didn't mind the fact that there is no close up shot because we get plenty of that while she was promoting the single.

Yeah, MaiMai gets another single! It has been a while, which isn't surprising because she hasn't been selling well. I don't know if I like it from what I've seen. I adore the extra close up shot of her singing at the beginning, but I want to cut the medium shot. I was thrilled to see a different set, which isn't a good sign, but I don't know what to make of the three people and her dance shot outfits. We'll see.

HANGRY&ANGRY are also back! They should of ditched the stuffed animals by now. Besides that, I think the video is great. The marionette shot is awesome for the slow verses. Them behind the wires and netting is great. The lighting is awesome. I'm not the biggest fan of the costumes, but this is promotion from a fashion brand (so not much you can do about that).

AKB48's choice PV get away is Guam, is SKE48's Hawaii? Now that they are with Avex, they probably could afford it. I like the idea of the blue and white costumes instead of just swimsuits. The jumping into the ocean shots are cool! This was a home run for me.

Solid job so far. I don't love the song, but the PV improved my impression of the song.

The PV doesn't do anything for me. There are some nice things about it, but the main set is used so much that it looks like they were under budget constraint. It didn't sell this song or the artist to me at all.

NMB48's first PV, this will set the tone of what style singles they will probably release onwards. I love the concept because you always notice how new idols have their black hair, but after debut dye it. I like the effect of adding the traditional pattern. The dance shot and close ups are basic, but they have different angles, lights, wind, ect so they keep the pace. I'm thrilled they feature NMB48's sexiness and good dance skills. Another great thing about this is that it includes each member. This isn't unusual if you consider AKB48 and SKE48's first PVs. The question is if this will continue if they release another single before the addition of a second team.

This is a new look for No Sleeves. I like the use of various shoots at one time. I don't care for the passing along different item shots, and them playing cards. I don't think they add anything to it. Besides that, they did a great job with adding some edge to the song.

I don't like the over-use of the word over, or the fact that they keep making the telephone-hand sign in the choreography. I first heard this song when they were promoting it. I actually love it. The dance shot is amazing. I like the close-ups, but they aren't anything special. I probably wouldn't have minded having the whole PV be the dance shot. What ruins this PV for me is the floating objects. Floating objects have never been used well in a PV except an AAA PV.

Blue and white colors make a really clean, summer PV. The lighting, the different angles and pans, and the sets are all on point. The only thing I would cut out is the running shots. I am surprised they didn't try anything more complex when it came to the dancing considering they were back up dancers.
