2012 H!P Ranking Explanation

The majority of my past explanations for ranking are reserved for AKB and Morning Musume, so with the exception of Michishige Sayumi I don't think people are aware of my preferences.  (If you look at earlier posts two major themes appear for Morning Musume: I love Shige, but dislike Takahashi Ai.)

10. Ikuta Erina (MM)
I have a sweet spot for the cute girls.  She stuck out to me as likely to pass through the auditions.  I was concerned when I saw her close-up shots from her first PV shoot because she seemed uncomfortable or at least awkward.  She appears to be more confident now.  It also was a good sign when Shige took her under her wing.  She just looks like she is a nice, quirky girl.  I like quirky.

9. Mitsui Aika (MM)
She is the most unappreciated member of Morning Musume. I liked her right away because she seemed to have this feisty, like a little puppy, aura.  I began to adore her after watching subbed clips of one of their DVDs.  (That whole segment makes me smile.)  I like how her voice sounds.  The sad thing is that I am a bit particular about hair, it just has to look good.  Unfortunately, someone insists on doing sub-par work with her hair.  The above photo I think is perfect.  I also find the sibling relationship between Reina and Aika charming.  I don't know if it is a matter of her not getting pushed like she did when she first joined, or if she needs to work harder.  (I enjoy watching her in concerts.)  Then again, I no longer follow them as closely as before.  I am disappointed that the western fans are quite cruel to her, often saying she looks old and such.

8. Tsugunaga Momoko (Berryz)
Her character has changed a bit, she moved into the comedy side where Sayumin has been carrying the torch for H!P. (I know I keep on changing her nickname = Michishige).  For one she is a definite ace.  Another one of her charms is that she has a nice butt, it isn't flat.  I can understand why people dislike her, for the same reason they don't care for Sayumin, because of her character.  But as a reminder, that isn't her so treat it like a character.  Did I mention she is a college student?

7. Natsuyaki Miyabi (Berryz)
Miyabi has sky rocketed in my ranking partly due to her chopping off her hair.  I think it looks best if it doesn't reach her shoulders.  She is another Berryz ace.  I guess her character is the nice girl.  She doesn't really have a distinctive character, maybe girl-next-door or natural.

6. Suzuki Airi (C-ute)
There goes the last member of Buono. They are all aces in H!P, which is why Buono is so popular.  They just all perform well and have star qualities.  I don't know why, but if I had to pick a center for Buono it would be Airi.  It could be her look.  Shock by C-ute was a great song (click link for lolz).  I've never seen her look bad.

5. Fukumura Mizuki (MM)
Honestly, I didn't understand why she was added as part of the 9th generation.  She just didn't look like anything special.  However, since watching her she has become my favorite of that generation.  I guess I'm drawn to the natural character, nice girls.  She is also quite pretty.  I hope she gets more screen time.

4. Hagiwara Mai (C-ute)
I think she is really pretty, maybe more than Airi.  She reminds me of teenage Dakota Fanning.  It is hard to explain why I like some of these girls, because I naturally gravitate to them.  They stick out to me/ they catch my eye.

3. Tanaka Reina (MM)
She is one of the few members in Morning Musume with a clear character/ role in the group.  She is the 'lone-wolf', stylish one.  That is the reason why she is fun to watch.  Tsunku was right about her being the ideal; she never ages!  She has been consistently a strong member.

2. Sugaya Risako (Berryz)
She may not have the strongest vocals, but I adore the sound of her voice.  It reminds me of a roar.  It is distinct and I think it is a good quality to have.  If you don't have strong vocals then it is best to have a unique sound.  I also enjoy her attitude; it is not a bad one, but a sassy one.  I guess I like confidence and people to have fun while performing.  Plus, boobs.  I'm sorry (it isn't the only thing I like but it is a bonus).  Oh, and she is average sized!  (which probably contributes to my previous point.)  I'm not that big of a pervert, I swear. . . okay no I am.  I am a college student; you can only think about sex once you enter high school.  (sorry I did that tangent thing again.)  She has the X factor that makes me incapable of not watching her.

1. Michishige Sayumi (MM)
Yeah, I'm predictable aren't I.  I prefer her 'I'm cute' character over Momo's, so I like watching her on variety shows.  She is actually really sweet if you read her blog.  I've pretty much have written all I can say about her.  (look at previous posts where her name is tagged.)  She never disappoints me.  If only v-u-den turned out well.  (I thought they were a good arrangement.)

An Idol Whose Character Mina Likes

TANAKA REINA (MORNING MUSUME)
You either love, hate, or indifferent to it.  (Not much in between besides those three.  I don't know many people who think it is just okay. . . but I have a feeling they exist.)  Reina's character makes her interesting and fun to watch.

Only You Morning Musume

For those of you paying attention, this makes the 46th single of supergroup Morning Musume. I'll put the video first and my comments second.

First, I'm in love with the visuals, the white dresses (or shorts and shirts in some of the cases) and crystal theme is really pretty. The background, while fairly simple reminds me a bit of the Kimagure Princess setting, which is a good thing for me. The song itself is simply perfection for me, it's proving that even with the younger girls in the group it can still have a more mature song. I loved Aika's hair, reverting back to Onna to Otoko no Lullaby Game.

The negatives: Poor Kanon's hair! Seriously that was not a good look for her all pulled back as it was.

Tsunku, still milking Tanakahashi's vocal duo but at least Gaki is getting plenty of screen time and vocal time (even if they autotuned it but I think it fit nicely into the song so I'm not complaining. And being the next leader it's good to get her out in the front more.)

Really? Riho? She's as cute as a button but why give her all of the lines out of the kyukkies? Maybe this is just my favoritism to Kanon but where were the rest of the kyukkies? Or Aika for that matter? Anyone seen Sayumi? Beuller? Beuller? I think it's great that Tsunku is giving one of the kyukkies a chance to shine, but let them all show off. Here's to hoping that the rest of the girls will get a chance to show off when Tanakahashi is seperated.

Now I know I've talked down on Tanakahashi a lot but I still adore them my hope for the future is that they'll both graduate and form a sub-group of their own, because really, that would be a great duo.

I guess I'll wrap this up with some more positivity and some unrelated news. Mari Yaguchi is getting married! At the age of 28 she has finally decided to tie the knot (and her husband is over six feet tall! Talk about height difference!) So congrats to Marippe and her new fiance! Gambatte!

Morning Musume Revival - How I Would Bring Back Morning Musume

Now the current 9th generation auditions and the upcoming graduations are already going to shake up the Morning Musume line up, but I don't trust Tsunku enough to fully take advantage of this chance.  Ai Takahashi has been one of the aces for awhile now and I think it is really getting stale.  If she is staying in the position as leader I don't think too much will change.  So here is what I would do to reawaken Morning Musume.  At this point Morning Musume would need to basically release themselves like a whole new idol group if it were to really comeback at full force.  To do that the whole image, and therefore line up would need to change.  Unfortunately, the members that I don't think need to leave are, but I'll stick by my plan.

Ai Takahashi should leave to work either as a solo artist, which wouldn't go too well, or to work in musicals like Takarazuka.  I truly believe that is where she should, and wants to, be.  Second, Niigaki Risa wouldn't help at all and should leave to do more acting jobs or to be an MC for Hello Project concerts.  The only reason why I think she should leave to focus on acting has nothing to do with her acting skills.  I don't know how well she can act.  All I know is that she wouldn't be a good leader unless she steps to the side and that she looked good in her movie trailer.  (I bet I've lost half of you at this point.)  I sincerely believe Reina Tanaka would make the best leader to reinvent Morning Musume.  She was labeled as the ideal member, she looks the same as she did like five years ago, and she wants to be leader.  She looks young and has the experience to lead.  Morning Musume is becoming the senpai group and is not going with it.  They are stuck at a cross roads: try a more adult image or lose five years to your look.  That is if they want to be popular.  They could continue to work and sell singles if they are okay with being irrelevant.  Face it, neither Takahashi or Niigaki give off the right impression for a new Morning Musume.  They need to start a new era!

This would make the members be Reina Tanaka, Sayumi Michishige, Aika Mitsui, and the 9th generation.  Reina Tanaka would be the leader, but I wouldn't make her the center.  In fact, I would avoid a center girl at all possible.  I would want three or more aces at the front.  Sayumi Michishige is a TV personality which is still a great tool for Morning Musume.  Aika Mitsui is still fresh faced and she compliments Reina.  To be perfectly honest I am worried that Morning Musume is not worth keeping around.  Some things aren't meant to last forever.

Morning Musume = love

So I may be one of the few that still finds Morning Musume one of the better groups. (Though I will not deny AKB48 nor any of the other girl groups out there of their awesomeness!)

I still find Morning Musume to be one of my favorite groups, Ai Takahashi has become a good leader (Even though she's hogging a bit of the spotlight) But I think that she's doing a good job leading the group. Their sound has changed a lot since the "golden age" of MoMusu and people see that as a negative, I, however, think that the group is just trying to adapt and grow to compete with not only other bands from Japan but the rising K-Pop influence!

As far as the older girls are concerned I'm placing my money on Ai and Risa graduating sometime after either the next single or the single after that. I hope that the leadership position will be given either to Sayumi, Reina or Eri seeing as they are the oldest. I think Eri's singing talent has been horribly unrepresented and I know that she's one of the stronger singers.

What I'd like to see as far as the group is concerned:
1. Tsunku brings in two to three new girls (starting Generation 9)
2. Ai Takahashi and Risa Niigaki graduate
3. Reina Tanaka becomes leader with Eri Kamei (or Sayumi Michishige) as sub-leader.
4. Reina, Eri and Sayumi graduate
5. Generation 10 is introduced
6. Leadership of the group falls to Aika Mitsui or Junjun (whomever of the two becoming the sub-leader)

Yes, Aika has quickly grown to be my favorite MoMusu!
