Drama Alert!

Well now that I've become a housewife (I'll explain in a small tangent in a moment) I have a lot of free time on my hands.  The only way to keep myself from getting bored out of mind, because there isn't any place to go besides the 7-11, is to find something to watch.  (There isn't enough people to play cards.)  I could watch movies on Netflix, but that only works in the US (same goes for Hulu).  I've caught up with the Daily Show, and now I wait for each episode of True Blood to go online.  What is another good source of TV. . . Japan and Korea!  Unlike my last host, we don't have a TV but thank NPH for the internet.  There are a couple new shows in Japan that I want to check out, but I've also got some recommendations for ones from Korea.

Side Note: I am WWOOFing which is basically a host program where you work for a family (usually on a farm but there are a variety of hosts) in exchange for housing and food.  All you need to pay is for transportation and the small program fee.  I was potato farming earlier, but now I have been reassigned to stay at home with another WWOOFer and do the cleaning and cooking.

Hana Kimi Remake First Impression

Let me start with a comment I left on someone's blog. . . I was looking to see if the raw for the second episode had been uploaded yet, but I found someone hating on the show instead.

How I responded:

"They can’t bring back the main cast of the original because that aired like five years ago so the actors are one two old and two doing other things. It is not uncommon for the OP to be sung by an idol group if their lead is from that group. . . pretty much every drama which has a member of Arashi in it has them singing the OP. AKB48 has tons of female fans and it is about time they do more things targeting their female audience. I have to admit it is hard to find any male actors that can surpass IKUTA Toma and Oguri Shun, but the guys aren’t all completely hideous. I am enjoying it so far because it is basically the same style but with different scenes. I also enjoy the new take on the girls school. (You also left out the fact that the main girls are all AKB48 members.) After I saw the guys I wasn’t sure if I would like it, but the girls make up for it (Maeda who is the lead may surpass the original in my eyes)."  

There are a couple cute guys in the show, but I think everyone can agree it is hard to beat Shun or Toma.  The good news is the nurse. . . I mean doctor (?) is a hottie McHot Pants (who I've seen in multiple boys love films).  The Shun replacement is cute, but not my type.  Toma is meh when it comes to looks but he does the character well.  

What I recommend is: old Hana Kimi fans should not watch for pure man-candy.  Instead watch for more Hana Kimi antics.  The style of the show and pacing is almost identical so far.  The lead female is almost like a clone of the first.  But the scenes are different even though it still follows the main plot points.  I am enjoying how they change things.  I haven't read the manga which this is based off of so I don't know if one follows the manga better or if they just picked scenes that didn't appear in the first drama.  I did read a comment by a fan of the manga saying that this one is closer compared to the 2007 version.  Therefore, maybe fans of the manga who got frustrated by how off the 2007 series was give the 2011 version a go.

I adore the Hibari Four!  They look like they came out of a manga.  Kashiwagi is playing a different version of Maeda's rival love interest.  This time it is less of a joke and more of a legit rival.  That means the fighting over the guys will be more intense.  The other three are perfect variety.  We have cute Miorin, sassy Minarun, and gorgeous Mariyagi.  

I suggest people watch it.  A remake doesn't have to be better than the original.  To have a good remake it must either surpass the original or present a different take/ twist on the original.  This doesn't seem to be going for better, but different.  Like, did you notice how the guys' school is run down and they don't have that red carpet?

Sungkyunkwan Scandal Review
If you haven't heard, I am picky when it comes to Korean dramas.  I could like the concept or plot, but the acting would ruin it for me.  However, this is one of my exceptions.  This is also one of the few period dramas that I've enjoyed too.  It is the usual gender bending plot of a girl dressing up as a man which causes love complications.  The great thing about this series is that it incorporates some feminism into it which I love to see in East Asian dramas and there is a lovely love shape included.  We have the usual good guy whose life becomes complicated after meeting the protagonist who is actually a female.  We have the bad boy, but actually a nice guy, rival.  We have the expected adored female who falls in love with the protagonist.  But here is what makes the series, we have another love interest in a playboy rich-kid who spends the first half trying to prove that the protagonist is a female and then the second half trying to make the good guy be okay with being a homosexual or flirting with the bad boy.

The romantic plot is great (beside that fact that you know right away who gets the girl) and so is the gender-bending plot.  I don't care for the politics or the fight scenes.  I'm was also bored with watching them solve riddles and such.  Therefore the last couple episodes were not my cup of tea.  The ending is pretty predictable.  I've only seen one gender-bending drama that ended in a way that I didn't see coming, Mendol Ikemen Idol.  (Whenever I try to convince someone to watch it I have to spoil the ending because it makes that show.)

New Dramas To Watch: Ouran High School Host Club!!

That's right everyone. Be excited. Be very, very excited. This July the beloved manga and anime series by Bisco Hatori that began way back in 2003 has finally become a live action drama with 23-year old Yusuke Yamato [who some of you may remember as the Nakatsu's aura-detecting roommate, Taiki Kayashima, in the Hana-Kimi drama] and 16-year old Haruna Kawaguchi [who played Himeji Rinka in the 2010 Yankee-kun to Megane-chan drama] as Tamaki Suoh and Haruhi Fujioka, respectively.
The now confirmed cast also includes the newlywed Yaguchi Mari's 6'4" husband, Masaya Nakamura, as Takashi Morinozuka, or Mori-sempai; and Yudai Chiba as his counterpart, Haninozuka Mitsukuni, better known as Honey-sempai. The ever- calculating Kyouya Ootori will be played by Daitou Shunsuke [also from Hana-Kimi as Sano's younger brother Shin]. And for the infamous Hitachiin twins we have Shinpei Takagi and Manpei Takagi [who were both featured in Mei-chan no Shitsuji as the Akabane twins of the Hongo family].

Now for those of you unaware of what Ouran High School Host Club is, I highly suggest checking out the manga and anime. Seriously. It's amazing. It centers around Haruhi, a very poor student attending a very rich school known as Ouran Gakuen. After accidentally knocking over a vase she couldn't pay for, she’s made to disguise herself as a boy and join the school’s Host Club to pay off her debt. And tell me, who can possibly resist this charming tale of a cross-dressing heroine stuck in a lush man-harem and the general silliness that comes with it?

New Dramas to Watch: Asuko March!

This is not going to become a frequent series, and for that I'm sorry.  The good thing is that I will only bring it up when there is a drama I'm crazy about, so only good suggestions from Mina.  I know Claire likes dramas so I could possibly harass her to write something for once.  (I'm just teasing Claire, not like she checks this at all, I guess one of us has to have a life.)  This new post came about because I'm not in the mood to study for my next final exam yet (I have till Tuesday), and I was in the mood to rewatch Kimi wa Petto or Jotei.  Oh by the way, Majisuka Gakuen 2 is still be awesome and this is the best place to check for subtitles to download.  If you are looking for other series, check out my drama recommendation series (the most popular one, I believe, is still on the side bar).  I was thrilled to see two of my favorite new actresses are starring.  Anyway, the first two episodes are up for Asuko March! so let's get to the premise and my thoughts!


Asuko March! is based off a manga of the same name, which follows Yoshino Nao (Takei Emi) as she enters her first year at a technical high school.  She made an error filling out the forms to her entrance exam, so she failed and was not able to enter the local girls' school.  (Make sure you always double check you put the write exam type!!!)  She is your typical high school girl so she doesn't care for being one of the only three girls in her entire class, the dirt, and all the rebellious men.  I'm sorry, but you will have to suffer her being weak and complaining about everything.  However, she starts to mend her ways, kind of, before the end of the first episode.

This show reminds me a bit of Hana Kimi, don't get too excited because I don't want to get disappointed, the reason is because it feels like one girl surrounded by guys.  And of course there is at least one love trian. . . shape.  The main romantic conflict is Nao is liked by both Arito, who was once a child star and now works as a host, and Makoto, a poor guy who works hard at his part time job to try help feed his family.  Makoto is, at least for now, shy about his feelings but I'm confident that they're there.  Then there is Momo, another first year female student but in a different class, who has strong, possessive, manipulative, dirty dirty. . . oh sorry I'm back, feelings for Arito.  Nao has a growing, question mark, friendship for Makoto and she is soft on him, but they tend to fight (it is Makoto's fault).  But, she can not help but be entranced by Arito's (oh my god gyu!) presence.  Then there is the nerd who I can not quite peg yet.  Is he just a jerk, or is it because he has creepy, stalker feelings for Nao.  Only on the second episode right now, but I sense it will be evil stalker option.

There are, as expected, adorable/ funny side characters (like her grandpa and the boys in her class).  Don't be deceived, this isn't just some light romantic comedy.  It already has a biased towards the blue-collar workers, and anti-consumer, youth culture.  At one point I suspected the (WWII) government might be behind it, but that is just a conspiracy theory.  Japan has an issue with young people using all their money on goods and other problems that consumer-cultures have.  That might not be the only social issue this program might tackle.  I hope we see Nao become just as good as the guys, defying the feminine stereotype and social convention.  Guess we will have to wait and see. . .

Ooku (2010) Review: man harem, Man Harem, MAN HAREM!

Ooku (2010) is the live action film, directed by Fuminori Kaneko, based on the manga Ooku: The Inner Chambers.  Yoshinaga Fumi, the creator of the acclaimed "sci-fi" manga, turns history on its axis by flipping gender roles in feudal Japan.  The film was a box office success and has a star studded cast.  

Summary:

A disease, which only affects men, has dwindled the male to female ratio to 1:4.  Women have therefore taken over jobs and Japan becomes a matriarchal society.  The young, female shogun dies and a new, and older shogun takes over.  She is serious and direct.  Her first objective as shogun is to see how the people live and how to improve the current situation, including wearing less flashy and expensive garb.  However, she is urged as a part of ceremony to visit the inner chambers.

However, that is only the societal and political climate of the film.  The main protagonist is Yuunoshin Mizuno, played by Arashi's Kazunari Ninomiya, who is the second child, only son, of a poor samurai family.  He enjoys practicing swordsmanship and he spends his days with his childhood sweetheart (which isn't fully realized at the beginning) and having sex with as many women as possible.  If it makes you feel better, he is not getting paid, and his only objective is to populate the Earth.  His mother tries arrange a marriage with a wealthy match who would consider him because he is good looking and can produce offspring.  Mizuno refuses and looks for a better way to help his family.  He decides to join the Ooku (inner chambers of the [young] Shogun's household).  There he intends to protect and serve the Shogun.  He says good bye to his sweetheart and family, forever.  

Once Mizuno enters he discovers it is different than what he expected.  There is a hierarchy he must learn and his days mostly consists of chores.  He is picked on by his peers and creates enemies as well.  However, he also makes friends and moves up in rank.  There is politics, fight scenes, some heavy petting, and more.  I will not say anything more in the summary to avoid spoiling it.

Review:

This is a wonderful movie, the only thing that really hurts it is the fact that it is a mainstream, Japanese film.  This enabled Ooku to draw a wonderful cast, however it is limited in how graphic the scenes become.  So don't get too excited by the pictures and the title of this post.  This is quite a chick-flick.  Women will love seeing themselves in all the dominant roles of society, the romance, the man-on-man touching, and the beautiful scenery.  I watched this with subtitles in a room full of college girls and we got yelled at for being too loud.  It is hard to review without giving much away, but the relationships between characters may be the best part.  Nino does a spectacular job as expected (wow he has been busy with this and GANTZ).  As I hinted at before, I do wish we got to see a little more intense romance.  The first kiss we see is a typical drama touch (and freeze) type, but things did improve.  I am interested in seeing the behind the scenes so I could see how the actors handled the man-handling.  One thing my friends complained about was Nino's old-fashioned hair.  I suggest you watch it, but I don't know if you fellas would appreciate it as much.  (Fan-service bonus after the jump.)

Have you ever dreamt about an AKB48 member?
Yes, two of them (in the same dream).  I just had another dream about Sae, but I woke up and it was early in the morning so I just went back to sleep, so I don't remember what happened.  I do remember that it was mainly about Sae. 

First AKB48 dream:
I was eating dinner at a fancy restaurant with my parents, my aunt, and Walowitz from Big Bang Theory (or maybe just the actor.  (My little sister wasn't there and my aunt has a boyfriend, so just a bit of background info as commentary.)  The food was really odd, and they had weird names as well.  There wasn't any description to the food, so I tried to guess by the name which one I would like. 

For some reason Perfume starts performing a mini-live (you know how some places have a guy playing a piano or something like that).  In my notes it said they were performing it a Capella.  We decide to go over there, it might of been just me but all of a sudden I have a friend with me.  The friend I had with me, I don't know.  (Not important.)  Anyway, my friend starts singing along (and remember we are at a restaurant so the performance isn't going to be that loud.  I like Perfume and it was kind of rude, so I get pissed and I did something.  I think I either tried to shush her or do some form of tackle.  I know those are soooo similar.

I then run off to help Mii-chan or Sae.  I couldn't remember which one.  I wish I tried to remember this part better, but this is where things get really dramatic.  There was a feeling of episodes, like there was already an episode before this dream.  For some reason, Sae already had her episode.  Maybe the dream I had last night was the prequel, but I don't think it was as Topsy Turvy as this.

Okay, Mii-chan is running all over the place, like a monkey.  (This part was really hard to remember even right after I woke up.)  Sae and I end up hugging, maybe Mii-chan bumped me or I tripped and Sae caught me.  Our faces get really close, like in Japanese dramas where they are about to kiss.  She then runs off; so close I know!

For some reason the reason Mii-chan, Sae, and I are running around this place (we are like in a side hallway so maybe this is a restaurant in a hotel.  I remember the hall had a carpet and there were a lot of warm colors.  Sorry, tangent.  There is a coup or evil dictator or something along those lines, and their goons are trying to stop us/ grab us.  The reason, I don't recall.
I run from the goons back to my table where the food has just arrived.  Walowitz had some crazy eggs dish and I was right and ended up with something chicken.

I saved the previews and fun videos after the jump to avoid slowing down the main page.

Sae looks sexy and appears to be the center, which isn't surprising because she is voted significantly higher than the other three.  Sayaka's hair is put up in any fashion; in my opinion that is better because they tend to make her face look harsher.  They look great, but I would of liked to see their costumes have a bit more variety.  This sounds great.  It is a good medium because people want to see them dance and people want to hear them sing.  Plus, as long as they do well, there will be plenty of time for a ballad and strong choreography single.  


I'm super excited because I've been following Keiko Kitagawa since her time in PGSM and I've also enjoyed the anime.  The only thing that makes me worried is that the lolita isn't as loli and the rocker isn't as punk.

Award Season + Secret Garden Review + More

Yeah Todd!  Todd always posts something amazing.  Here is the full list of nominees and awards.  Okay, now the rest of this post is going to be quick because I am hungry (and haven't eaten anything yet), I have three chapters of boring science textbook to read and take good notes on, and then I have to write a short Japanese composition and the theme is 'letter of complaint'.  The only thing I've been complaining about is how hard the Japanese quizzes (but I have to study like midterms) are.  Plus, I don't know if I can express my feelings if I wrote about that.  Sorry tangent again.

In case you haven't heard (well technically read), I have had difficulty getting into Korean dramas.  I 'discovered' Secret Garden when my friend mentioned the drama.  I introduced her to LIFE (which I highly recommend if you haven't watched it yet).  When she mentioned Secret Garden, she said it wasn't over-acted.  Another friend of mine who adores Korean men showed me Big Bang's(?) parody of this drama.  I thought it was funny, so I might as well give the series a chance.  I am not looking forward to them switching bodies.  This drama contains some of my favorite things!  Complicated love shapes and more.  I discovered I have a new kink: girls that kick butt and have one medium sized tattoo on their upper-arm.  (This is what I write about after announcing we got nominated, lol. . . I just wrote lol.  I am not expecting to get a best post nomination anytime soon.)  This was only confirmed after I watched Love Exposure for the second time with a large group of friends.  I adore that film. . . stopping myself before I get off on another tangent.  But, when I have some more time I might review Love Exposure and Infinity because i watched both of those recently with friends.

I find that these leads are tons cuter, god I love this movie!

The basic plot line is (sorry I am not going to do names because they confuse me) about a stunt women who is quite beautiful, but still, as you imagine, a bit boyish.  She is independent and surprisingly, considering this is a drama, wants to fight or just apologize how you would expect in real life.  Even if she doesn't deserve to get yelled at at work she takes it and apologizes.  When she encounters a biotch she holds back until it gets to the point where someone needs to be put back in their place.  The first time we see her she is oozes cool; I could see Sae playing this part.  During that part I totally wanted to jump her.  The guys probably enjoy seeing her, with her hot bod, doing some stunts.  Jeez, so much for summarizing in this paragraph, more like introducing the character of the female protagonist.

Anyway, we first learn that her co-worker/ boss has feelings for her, that she has a girly waitress as a friend/ roommate, and that the actress she is a stunt-double for is insecure and therefore hates her. (I'm now looking up her name.)  Kil Ra-Lim ends up getting injured but hides it from everyone one else.

Our main protagonist, Kim Joo-Won (what the hell, sorry not used to Korean) is a rich kid who owns a Department store and has a pop-star cousin, Oska.  (I might be wrong so forgive me.)  Oska begs Joo-Won help him with his lady-trouble, which he is in because he is a womanizer.  Joo-Won goes on set and accidentally grabs the actress' stunt double, Ra-Lim, instead.  After spending some together, including Ra-Lim ending up in the hospital and Joo-Won finding out that she is an Oska fan, Joo-Won is surprised to find that he can't get her out of his mind.  He even starts to think he is going crazy because he keeps seeing her (in his imagination).  She isn't what he thought his type was.  So he decides to find her, but after their first meeting she was under the impression he was working for Oska and is now a jobless-bum.  He ends up auditioning for their stunt school and keeps showing up around her.  Ra-Lim seems confused about her own feelings; her sense of independence, and later their different backgrounds, causes her to continuously reject Joo-Won.

Here is the part I haven't gotten to yet, but there have been clues for (stolen from AsianMedia Wiki):

"Yeun-Sul (Kim Sa-Rang) and Oska are ex-lovers, but they can't seem to forget each other. Because Yeun-Sul had a high-living status, she was arranged to attend a blind date with Joo-Won. Even though Jo-Wan made it clear that he doesn't have interest in her, Yeun-Sul keep pursuing Joo-Won. Yeun-Sul knows Joo-Wan is Oska's cousins and wants to use Joo-Wan to get under Oska's skin. Yeun-Sul then manages to become the director for Oska's next music video. The video shoot takes place on Jeju Island. 

Meanwhile, stunt woman Ra-Lim is a fan of Oska's music and wins a contest to go to Jeju Island with Oska himself. Ra-Lim also wanted to take part in Oska's music video. Joo-Won learns that Ra-Lim won the contest to spend time with Oska and decides to follow them to Jeju Island. 

On Jeju Island, the main participants all gather. While they were mountain biking, Ra-Lim somehow gets separated from Joo-Won and Oska. Joo-oan searched frantically over Ra-Lim's disappearance and went searching for her. Eventually, Joo-Won was able to save Ra-Lim but ended up stranded in a mysterious place called 'Secret Garden'. Mysteriously, the owner of 'Secret Garden' seems to know Joo-Won and Ra-Lim very well. The owner presented two bottles of alcohol to Joo-Wan and Ra-Lim. They manage to get their way back to the hotel before night and went their separate ways. At night, Joo-Won and Ra-Lim face sleeping difficulties and took this time to clear their minds while having sips of their gifted alcohol individually. And a twist of intrigue took place in the plot when both Ra-Lim and Joo-Won switched souls!"

While I am not attracted to any of the male leads, but someone new just turned up who looks cute, I am now a fan of Ha Ji-Won who plays Ra-Lim.  My only complaint about her character is that when we first get a glimpse of her she is a badass, and seems to be a bit more of a tomboy than she behaves the rest of the show.  I like that it shows that tomboys can have a feminine side (cough Sayaka Akimoto cough cough), but I wish they also pushed her boyish side a bit more.

Ra-Lim has the small quirks that dramas like to include, like her tapping her foot when someone is flirting with her or mimicking her text alert, but, like Japanese dramas like Hana Yori Dango, the guys might take the cake in stupid characteristics.  Besides the untalented Oska, Joo-Won's cool is repeatedly stabbed at.  He is afraid of elevators.  When he tries to get Ra-Lim out of his head he always says the same thing.  During conversations he randomly says stuff about Ra-Lim.  His attempts to be cool are hindered by his appearance and body-language.  For example, how I am suppose to take that sit-up scene as seductive when he had his track-suit going over his chin!  His tracksuit is so stupid!  Good thing when he is at work he has to wear a suit, it suits him much better.  (After the jump I am going to include the parody to give you guys a tease, but there are spoilers.)

I keep on thinking of who I would want to see in a Japanese version.  The only issue I've been having is the age difference between some of the male actors and some of the female actors.

Sae Miyazawa - Ra-Im
When I first saw Ra-Im I saw Sae.  Sae is sporty and can be girly.  The only problem with Sae is that she doesn't have much acting experience, and she could be a bit too boyish compared to the Korean version.  I think she has the right look for the personality, but the character is described as really pretty.  (Sayaka Akimoto could probably play this part too.)

Understudy: Hikari Mitsushima
Hikari definitely has enough acting experience under her belt, more than need to play this part.  We know from her performance in Love Exposure than she can play cute and bad-ass.  She would also have less of an age gap between her and the guys I am thinking of.  I am a bit biased because I adore her.  Fun fact she was a member of the idol group Folder5.

Nino - Joo-Won
Nino also has more than enough acting experience to pull off this part.  Besides that, I thought of him because of the character's personality.  He already has the attitude for the role.  

Oguri Shun - (Director) Jong-Soo
This is such a dream cast, even if they were to produce a Japanese version it probably would, if I was lucky, one out of any of these actors/ actresses.  Shun has done action films like the Crows Zero films.  He also has a similar atmosphere as the character.  The guys get even better when you see all of my selections; boy would it be a behind the scenes party.

Acchan - Ah Young
I just picked her because if one AKB48 member was going to be cast another one could be in it too (it has happened before).  She has the acting experience, and pretty much any girl could play this part.  It doesn't really require any distinct qualities; its just the best friends and all.

Fukuda Saki - Yeun-Sul
If you've seen her in LIFE you know she has the capabilities to portray the bad girl.  At first I was thinking the Takei Emi, but she is even younger than I am.  I was trying to avoid the age gap.

Matsujun - Oska
I don't know, I guess if you mixed some of his part characters you'll get something like Oska.  Matsujun isn't the greatest singer, but he has a ton of fans.  He has played stupid and player roles.  He would make a good love interest.  Plus, consider Shun, Nino, and Jun backstage(, Acchan and Sae are close too).

Takahiro Nishijima - Ssun
He has the younger, cute, but sexy look.  He can sing pretty well (lead vocalist of AAA).  He also has acting chops, for example Love Exposure.  I think he would be perfect.
