Itano Tomomi's 10年後の君へ & Clone PV Review

I've been waiting for Itano Tomomi's next single for what felt like a long time. She is my favorite soloist from AKB48, and one of my top idol soloists, that are active. (Although there aren't that many so it ends up being, in no particular order, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, Narsha, and Itano Tomomi at the top of my list.) This PV brings me back to the early 2000s when it comes to musical style and cinematography. Did anyone else think of BoA's Japanese works from the 2000s.


This is why I can see Itano Tomomi doing well on her own as long as she has the right support system because she has the same cool swag of Amuro Namie. I used to not care for Amuro Namie live because she didn't seem to be trying too hard, but it has grown on me. I was used to Britney Spears' level of performance, so she seemed flat to me. This is why I don't think much of critiques of Itano performance quality when it comes to facial expressions. I mean, Amuro Namie is considered one of the top female artists in Japan.


Side Note: Itano Tomomi wrote one of the B-sides (lose-lose) for this single, which is a great sign. A lot of major female artists in Japan start off as idols, but now either completely or have a major hand in producing their own music.

The very beginning brings me back to the 2000s period, with the editing technique to make the video look fuzzy or poor quality. This combined with the rainy city backdrop sets the scene for a lovely ballad. I'm glad they only included this technique twice, because it would of likely gotten old if used repetitively.


Combined with the church shots and club storyline scene the video just screams retro. The retro concept works wonderfully with the theme, which is kind of like a letter 10 years later. [The title translates to 'To You 10 Years Later.] Ten years ago from now would be 2002. I guess if you don't care for that period then you won't appreciate this song and promotional video as much. That period represents my youth so it is nostalgic for me. Now that I think about it, the video itself feels nostalgic.

Back to the various shots. Itano Tomomi looks gorgeous in the church scenes. I appreciate that they incorporated a storyline to the PV. Considering the theme it is really necessary. One problem I have is that she is in high school then but she is having a fling with an architect. I can see girls enjoying it because high school guys can be immature and he seems like the ideal guy. Although, they have limitations. If they make her older in the flashbacks then she would be in her 30s present day. I also wouldn't prefer a high school drama considering Itano's age. She is becoming an adult, so her solo works should reflect that. So I guess this is a good compromise. [Still jailbait.]


Overall it is simple, but nothing exemplary. However, when you consider the theme of the piece everything works well to bring you back to the early 2000s. I would say it is a success. It is not my favorite PV, even from Itano as a soloist. It is successful at what it means to do, instead of just her singing a ballad alone on some cheap sets.

I didn't know if I was happy that this isn't the A-side when I first found out. I liked it when I heard the leaked previews, but it isn't as catchy as her previous singles. However, I don't like the real A-side as much as Dear J and Fuini. Clone follows Itano usual style of Pop infused with Hip-Hop elements. It is the promotional song for another of her E-Mobile commercials, which isn't my favorite compared to their other CMs. I guess she gets to release a solo single every time E-Mobile wants another CM song.


This PV isn't anything spectacular, but pretty good considering it is for a B-side. The majority of idols, and even artists only produce music videos for their title tracks. Unlike the A-side, this doesn't seem to have much layers to it. It only has two backgrounds, but there is a variety in shots and pans. I have no idea what is going on with the bottles on ones of the sets. Itano Tomomi spends the majority of her time being chill and or having a playful, mischievous expression. They also didn't use the promotional outfit for Clone. This video might of been better if they had done a different dance shot. Then again, this is only a B-side so I shouldn't have high expectations.


There is a dance close up that is pretty cool. It is a close-up shot but instead of her just singing in front of the camera she does some minor choreography and you can see back-up dancers behind her. This works mostly because the dance difficulty is low. However, Itano with all her swag doesn't look stiff. It is a bit disappointing because she hasn't released a solo song yet that challenges her dancing. Itano was a child-dancer so I bet she is capable of upping-the-ante. On the other hand, the dancing reminds me of Hitoe (SPEED)'s solo PV Inori.


All in all this PV is pretty flat and low budget. But I'm giving management and Itano a break on this one because they don't need to make a promotional video for a B-side. I guess it is due to AKB48 that I now desire pretty good quality B-side PVs too. The dance and performance by Itano is not premium quality, but neither the choreography or the concept of this video require much from her. I would only recommend this if you like to watch Itano Tomomi because there really isn't any other reason to do so.

Dubstep Is A Blessing & A Curse: Morning Musume's Renai Hunter PV Review

It feels like a while since Morning Musume has done anything.  I ignored their last single because I hated it.  (It wasn't just the costumes.)  While this video made me think they were back at trying to win my affections, it is still not as good as the quirky Maji Desu ka Ska.  I was pretty pumped when I heard the audio previews because they were utilizing dubstep.  I liked it, didn't love it though.  The music video received the same luke-warm response.


The close-up shots are very nice and match the image of the song.  I also find the outfits much better than some of their previous singles.  I don't mind the setting for the dance shot, although they've done better.  My complaint is that choreography sucks, in my opinion.  There are some good moments, but it was a huge disappointment.  I don't expect amazing dance skills from Morning Musume, but while listening to the previews I imagined something better.  


I dislike Tsunku's habit of auto-tuning Michishige's voice.  Her voice is naturally high pitched, why do you want to make it more so?  Then there was the usual issue of distribution of lines.  I don't mind some girls getting more than others, but could everyone get at least one or pair up for major ones?  I also wish they would just cut out the magazine shots because this sounds like a dance-track and that should be featured more.  Besides, they look out of place.  Well, I guess they don't have anything else to highlight in the dance section.


Dubstep tends to go well with amazing choreography/ dancing.  It doesn't even need to be too spectacular, it just has to have a pop to it.  That is why you see artists, especially in K-Pop, add dubstep just for a dance section.  So, I'm sorry Morning Musume fans who liked this video, the robot and then vibrating in a pose is not going to do it.  (There is a similar case where it is perfectly acceptable, but this is not Ayumi Hamasaki's Marionette.)  


They spend the majority of the time throwing their first towards the ground or the ceiling, or doing a hop-step in a circle while shaking one of their hands.  The wave thing didn't do anything for me.  Seriously, they could of tried something new with a superb dance shot for the entire PV.  


There was one element that I did love.  They split up the girls and they do different movements, you can spot it during Reina's first set of solo lines.  I appreciated the slight variety in angles, but have you never heard of pans?  So all in all, I am back to my position of not following them closely.  I mean the PV didn't bore me and everyone looked great, but it wasn't that good.  Dancing is a pretty big thing in my book.  It is one of my reasons Minegishi Minami is my AKB oshi.  Plus, there are so many idol groups now with strong choreography (all the E-Girls, Fairies, SNSD, Kara, the 48s).  I guess this cemented my outlook that I shouldn't expect anything from Hello Project.  I heard dubstep and started visualizing.  One of these days I am going to give up.  The good news is that I am really digging Fairies at the moment.  [I made a ton of screen shots, but it seems the function broke or something went wrong, so I lost them all.]

Arashi won by a pretty good margin.  Personally, I think Big Bang put in more effort.  Yet, I get why Arashi beat them.  They really know how to work the camera.  Now that I think of it, Big Bang reminds me of Arashi.  They both have a great assemble.  When it comes to both groups even if I don't like their music I gravitate to them.

Not a bit surprised that Mayuyu won the poll.  For one, I didn't love anyone in particular (I had critiques on all of them) but also because I'm confident there are a bunch of biased readers.  The production value on Mayu's was good.   


My favorite PV for this week has to be ORANGE RANGE's, and my least favorite goes to KAT-TUN.  I'm planning on using my three votes for miss A, ORANGE RANGE, and finally DAZZLE VISION.  I have a suspicion that Momoclo (without Akari) will do well in this poll.  The reason why I don't like it, besides the song, is that the concept doesn't make sense.  It is just a hodge-podge of things with just the excuse it is science fiction style.

So we first see the girls on the moon with glowing eyes so either their robots of some kind or have super powers, and one is playing the electric guitar for a couple of seconds.  They never reintroduce the playing instruments.  Yeah it is a cool shot but am I to believe these are cylon/ pirate/ rockstars on the moon?  Please pick a couple and stick with it and we are only three seconds in.  They fly around on bikes, but also can travel by floating, and their space ship or hub in the background also has wires that they connect to their heads.  They can do the whole dragon ball thing and celebrate when Reni starts floating away even though they've already done it.  WTF!  What does pirates have to do with any of this?  There is a significant lack of pirate-lack activity, so why aren't they wearing futuristic outfits.  Pillage a plant.  Give them some swords.  Just because you can put babies, kitties, sparkles, Russian Unicorns, dragons, cylons, singing policewomen, and coffee in a PV doesn't mean you should.  They could of done plenty with the bikes, space travel, and pirates to make a great PV.  I dig doing something different and all but that doesn't mean you get a pass on doing it well.

Forever Alone PV (0 votes): Lead's Wanna Be With You

Jeez, half of the time I'm not sure if you guys are just voting for your favorite artist or because you really like it.  I'm surprised that Lead didn't get any love I thought it was really good; I liked it better than Miryo's video that got four votes.  When I took an earlier look at the results I was concerned because Selection 6 (AKB)'s Sweet & Bitter was aiming for second place.  I know a lot of good gifs came out of it, but it was vanilla.

This Week: 
To be honest I was quite disappointed.  Most of these PVs were pretty good or were on the right track but one thing or another happened and ruined it for me.  I hesitantly say Passpo had my favorite MV.  Their dance shots were flawless and the small storyline shots in theory were good the acting was way too cheesy for my taste.  However, the twist at the end saved it for me.  My least favorite is definitely Ailee's MV.  The editing is overdone you would think the editors thought she was ugly or something.

Let's start off with the results of what you guys thought were the best and worst PVs.  Reminder: You only get to vote once, but you can select up to three options.  [I'm going to be honest, I'll split ties based on who I thought was better.]  Thus far only 21 people have voted, so I will keep it open.  If the results change or a significant number of people vote I will let you know.  I'm not too surprised by DMM getting the top spot.  It had a relatively good message (why can't the girls have guy problems and not work as hostesses) and a storyline.  I liked the outfits for the dance shot because it wasn't overtly sexual, but the glimpse of leg was gorgeous.  It was great to see the star power and it was reminiscent of past Morning Musume releases.  I'm hoping they try to push it and not just be out there to make money because they are well-known and talented.

I'm disappointed in you guys though; voting for Rambling Girls PV?  They just dance around in shiny, futuristic outfits and do this hip sway thing for half of the song.  SDN48 had PVs that had more variety, better dancing, and better lyrics.  I do give it to you guys, the song is catchy (but I hate myself for it because it is mostly 'la la las').

Mina's PV Post With A Twist

I'm a lazy person who is busy with classes and having a life, so I've kind of stopped reviewing PVs.  I know I'm horrible person.  I'm procrastinating a lot of things including an essay that is being peer-edited tomorrow.  I like voting in polls on other blogs so I thought it would add a little something.  The twist is I will share my top picks (and maybe my least favorites) and you guys can vote for your favorites.  The next time I spam you guys I will reveal the results.  So yep.

Kyary Pamyu Pamyu is Idol Royalty

Kyary Pamyu Pamyu is an 18 year-old fashion blogger and model who reached international fame after the release of her first promotional video, PON PON PON.  The video went viral.  MTV deemed it "One of the craziest videos ever!"  It hit the Japan's Billboard Hot 100 at number 72.  I was memorized by the song and video.  But I never pass judgement on a artist based on one single; it could very well be a fluke.  However, with her second PV she comes back at full strength.  Well, this may seem a bit toned down in comparison, but this single is not inspired by decora culture which in itself is wacky.  The title and the subject matter is a bit suspect.  She has a line of false eyelashes.  So am I surprised that fake eyelashes is in the title?  What I adore about her style is the sense of controlled chaos.  It isn't some overly cute fluff which is revealed in the details.  Her videos create a wonderland that is sweet yet mysterious.  She is definitely on my list of people to watch. 

Mina Is Back. . .again With MOAR PV Reviews!

HYUNA stop wipping your crotch while people are looking at you!  Oh, and rubbing your butt against his is not how you do sex.  I get you want to be sexy.  I think you can do it to.  You are trying way to 'effing hard!  Look at the dude.  Everything is covered and he is just being chill and he looks smokin'.  Why must girls be overtly sexual to be sexy, but guys can just be simmering under the surface!  You just need to be confident Hyuna and people will think you are sexy.  Hyuna ruined this video, well that and some of the clothes she wore were a bit how much leg can we show without showing her pussycat.  Wait a second. . . did he just touch her crotch?  The video is quite fashionable and I like how they play off of each other.  I like the choreography where he goes to kiss her but she turns away.

It might be because I love Takei Emi but for a ballad PV I was throughly entertained.  When it comes to ballads the trick is to just keep my attention.  The song is lovely.  The sets and costuming is stylish, which makes sense since she is a charisma model.  I was confused at first by the contrast between the spring and winter, which appeared disjointed.  My first guess was that Emi was thinking back to the beginning of a love-relationship.  In Japanese literature spring signifies the beginning of romance, the courtship period.  Summer is when things get hot and heavy.  The relationship becomes strained in the fall.  And everything is dead by winter.  However, it is revealed that the spring segment is in one of the crystal balls.  I do enjoy twists, but I guess I could of realized it earlier because we get a glimpse of the crystal ball towards the beginning.  Takei Emi does a wonderful job at singing a ballad in front of the camera without it appearing stiff.

The beginning of this video reminds me of K-Pop teasers.  It is very cool and serious and then you see the PV and hear the song, and it is rarely the same in epicness.  Another super group?  Is that going to become a trend now?  Most of these groups irk me because a fair number of the members never sing.  I get it, they are dancers.  Still, this is a music group isn't it?  I want them to at least sing back up.  I wish Happiness' lead vocalist would just go solo.  The dancing is good, as expected.  I like how they approached the outfits.  While the set matches the costumes well, it looks romantic and a bit gothic which does not match the song in the least.  There is also a bit of the Super Junior trapped in a room thing going on too.

It seems the world is going through a fairytale phase (there are two snow white films coming out).  I love the childlike wonder or this video.  My issues are with the length of her dress.  Her dress looks like something I would wear as a child and the video itself seems innocent.  I just want it a little bit longer, or shorts would work too.  I want that duck by the way.  The song is spectacular and playful, like I'm listening to a fantasy book.  I find it odd that she is bubbly in the storyline shots, but dead-pan in the dance shot.  It weirded me out.  I guess she is suppose to be doll-like like the figures that pop out of clocks.  My last critique was that the dance shot left something to be desired.  Since she had a traditional style dance shot I would of preferred a bit more movement and dancing on her part.  Either that, or more creativity in the angles and pans during the dance shot.

The cityscapes and the desaturation/ use of cool (as in the temperature) colors.  The problem here is that box!  You can't introduce it as a major character if no one has any idea why it is there.  You need to give at least a hint.  I hate the close-up and solo, box-room shots.  With all the outdoor shots, including the dance shot, using the typical room thing looks out of place.  They needed to have a dance shot in a room complimentary to the outdoor dance shot.  They then could of used the outdoor shots at the climax of the song to give it some extra umph.  They should of introduced more variety towards the beginning because I started to get board.

In the dark room shot the introduction of different shirt colors was very interesting.  I love when they try something that I've never seen.  See!  There is nothing wrong with a room music video, but you need to add some a little bit of spice to it.  The shots, like of their feet, the consistent movement it all adds a bit.  Notice how they never let there be no movement, either the camera or the members, for too long.  This had an amazing dance shot!  I could of been perfectly satisfied with just that.

Oh my word, I am loving every second.  What I love about it is that it doesn't try to do anything that different.  It is all in the details.  The variety in cinematography combined with the basic style of a music video is brilliant.  It is simple but still unique at the same time.  Stylish.

This is adorable.  They are doing cute right, not the annoying aegyo thing.  If you have fun and act natural you don't have to go over the top to look cute.  This is my favorite winter wonderland of the year so far.

Let's see, three dance shots in rooms with close ups.  This doesn't sell it to me.  There is nothing horrendous about any individual shot, bur I can see these three dance shots in completely different videos.  Like the plain room could go with a gritty and or retro theme.  The lightning room is kind of hipster.  Then there is the bee-hive which makes me think of 4Minute.

Here is my deal with this video.  I feel like their crotch is in my face!  Those short, shorts combined with the camera looking slightly up at them tends to put their junk right near the center of the shot.  Plus the forward pan at that low level doesn't help.  I think 4Minute has a butt fetish.  They keep on popping and touching their tush.  I guess I'll give them a pass and assume that I just randomly noticed that area and started obsessing over it.  (They get an extra star.)

The brilliant thing about this video is that it appears to be just a typical idol video, but then all hell breaks loose.  (I've tested it on my friends on Facebook, it is true.)  I think they are hilarious and I love to join in.  I don't love all their humor, but I understand why they do it.

I like the styling of the video, it works well with the tone of the track.  HOWEVER, I find the song and the video offensive.  Women= a commodity on the same level of alcohol and cash.  Plus, the concept of the song, and how it is incorporated into the video, is completely unoriginal.  The majority of hip-hop songs in the US are all about men having a lot of all three.  I hate that the song is catchy and video looks amazing, but the context is horrible.  (Um, did you mean anything by taping girls' mouths shut. . .)  They lost a star for the look how much hot ladies, money, and fame I got shots.  Just a different cliche.
