AKB48's Kaze wa Fuiteiru PV

I really like it.  I have enough points to cover shipping, plus since I work I probably have enough tips to cover the rest.  I am going to hold off for a bit longer to see if any of the other songs will be leaked.  I am a bit on the fence which version I want.  My favorite cover is Type B.  I tend to like all their B-sides, but I'm going to wait just the same.  However, I want to get a picture so I am going to keep an eye on that.  The Limited Editions are all sold out.  Here is the info and links for the Regular Edition Type A and B and their covers.  If you use my links I get points (which doesn't cost you anything extra) and I will be more willing to also fling my cash at idols.

Both of these come with an external photo! They both cost 1600yen plus shipping (including tax).

You Cannot Resit Love

Mina is right, there have been many big events lately, just in the 48 universe, which is all I can manage to keep up with. While I have always enjoyed the important posts Mina has provided us all, I hope no one will begrudge her the time to attend to her studies and health properly. I certainly can do more to write for this blog. It has been more than a month since I last posted and I have at least one exciting event I personally attended before returning to the US and A.

I don't think I've mentioned it here before, but I had, until this spring, been actively trying to avoid even looking at SKE48. This has been difficult as my favorite Majisuka Gakuen character was portrayed by the SKE star Matsui Rena. When SKE48 did their own drama, Mousou Deka, my resolve began to crumble and I watched that delightful drama, which deserves an entry of its own. My resolve crumbled further as the other SKE star Matsui Jurina did such a wonderful job as the side-kick to my god Watanabe Mayu in Majisuka Gakuen 2. I was done for when Kimoto Kanon stabbed Gekikara as Miso.

While I made my pilgrimage to the AKB48 theater and saw AKB48 perform at the Tokyo Dome City Hall and Seibu Dome when in Japan this summer, I also watched SKE48 perform at the Zepp Nagoya and attended my first handshake event on my last day in Japan. This event was for SKE48 and in Nagoya. When I got up on the morning of my last full day in Japan I did not know what I was going to do, but I vaguely remembered SKE might have an event. I had bought their latest single, and I had a certificate for a handshake in it.

I had already been planning to spend my last day in Nagoya, so I quickly looked up where the event was and hopped on the Shinkansen as I had previously planned. Had I planned ahead better I would have made it to the even earlier, but as it was I missed a song or two of SKE's performance before the handshaking began. After their performance, I sat in some shade and chatted with some local fans. Not so amazingly, two of them remembered seeing me at the Moss Burger before the Zepp Nagoya show we all attended (I am a caucasian and an inch or so taller than six feet). They told me how things worked and one fellow gave me a picture of Rena and Jurina he had multiple copies of.

Universally my experiences with meeting 48 fans in Japan have been nothing but positive. I am often asked if AKB or SKE are popular in the US and A and I have to inform them that no one really knows of them. To bring the point home I tell them of the first AKB48 show I saw in the US- at Anime Expo in 2010. That theater could hold seven thousand, but there were only three thousand in attendance. The fans I met that day helped me understand what I needed to do to exchange my voucher to get a handshake ticket as we chatted about our favorites. They let me know all the tickets for Matsui Rena were already gone.

That was fine with me as the girl that stabbed Gekikara had quickly become a favorite of mine. I easily obtained a ticket to meet Kimoto Kanon. I had spent the entire summer studying Japanese and I was hopping to tell Non that I had traveled all the way from America just to meet her, but I am not very good at Japanese. The line moved too quickly and I had not yet figured out what I needed to say. I jabbered incomprehensibly and she smiled politely. She was waaaaaaaaay cuter in person. Her dimple was so amazingly pretty. The staff pushed me along so quickly that I had no chance to compose myself or recover. Miki Yakata was paired with Non and she spoke to me in English and said it was nice to meet me. I replied to her in English with what little coherence I had left.

Rather than buy more copies of the single to try and see Non again, I returned to downtown Nagoya, found my hotel and then set out to explore SKE related places. I had already visited the SKE48 shop in Shibuya, Tokyo. I washed up and went to explore SKE48's home. I went to their shop and took pictures of Nagoya before taking a disco nap. I went clubbing at 1am and returned to my hotel at 5am to catch a little sleep before flying back to the US & A. While this might seem to be an exciting last night in Japan, and it was pretty good, I recommend looking for up to date information for the club scene. The clubs I tried to go to bore no resemblance to their on-line descriptions and were closed by the time I got there (as opposed to just starting to get going at 1am as I had read). Still, I found adventure, just not the adventure I had been looking for.

So, despite having spent a year actively trying to ignore the existence of SKE48, the only members of the 48 family I have had the honor of touching have been members of SKE48. Kimoto Kanon is adorable beyond belief and able to be bone chillingly terrifying, as shown in Majisuka Gakuen. Now that I will be able to buy a Uchida Mayumi calendar finally, I find myself wanting more pictures and posters of Non to add to my small collection. I guess the lesson here is to always open your heart to love all of the angels of the 48 family of idols.

Mina's Apology

I just wanted to give you guys an update on why I haven't been blogging as much.  There has been some big news as of late and unfortunately I won't be covering it.  Perhaps someone will take the opportunity to be the one spamming you guys.  I am a sophomore in college and under a lot of stress (even though it is still only a couple weeks in).  I have 17 credits, volunteering at a local elementary school, and working part time.  Japanese and my other classes are really demanding.  I am already behind in two of my classes so I can do the minimum requirement in Japanese and my Pre-Modern Japanese Literature (which requires translating).  I am spending every night in the library.  I am pondering on quitting my job so I don't go insane.  Hopefully I can buckle down and give up some of my sleep and fun time in order to keep up my GPA.  This all means that this blog is on the back-burner for me.  I do recommend to check out the blogroll in the sidebar (which I do every other day or so) to see what is going on.

Kara's 'STEP' MV Review + Upcoming LIVE on YouTube!

I tend to dislike most female, Korean artists while active in Japan.  However, when they release something in Korea I adore it.  I didn't care for Kara when they were active in Japan.  I love the song.  The use of colors is a ton of fun.  The girls aren't trying to be overly cute or sexy.  This proves to me is that a studio song without a plot line can be amazing.  The blue outfits in the white room reminds me of the '80s.  However, when they are dancing with the bleachers in the back I think of '90s Britney Spears.  The bright set and mix of patterns bring me back to miss A's Breathe music video.  Even though it is just dance shots and close up shots, they do a variety of angles, pans, and mixture of lighting.  The pacing is great so I never got bored.  The one thing I would of liked to see is that towards the end they use all of the various dance shots.  They seemed to do a pairing of dance shots that they switched back and forth between.

The main set is very picturesque and loud.  What I think is cool is that they were able to do that without distracting too much from the girls themselves.
They used three types of solo close up shots.  One was a party scene, where you could see extras dancing.  The other, a play on the generic close up but closer which gives it s bit of an edge.
One of my personal favorite, simple editing techniques is cutting clips together without transition, if the clips are similar enough it keeps things interesting.  One example they used is by using various distance shots.

This was another twist to the classic solo shot.  They have the subject off center; the movement attracts the audience attention still.
It is the same room as before, but with a different underlining color.
We can see a similar background from one of the solo shots.  There is so much going on that I am impressed that it all layered together.
To be personally honest, this style shot was beautiful, but out of place compared to the rest of the video.
The large group dance, with an upwards (bird's eye) pan had a hint of Bollywood to it.

I hope someone got to see it.  I didn't get to watch the concert on YouTube because it was during the school week at like 2AM my time.

PV Reviews 110903

This is pretty good quality considering what it is for.  It is a bit dull.  I mostly watched this just because Yui from YuiKaori is in the video.

This video is disappointing after their last couple PVs that they released.  It is a typical, low quality, idol PV.

This is basically footage from the album photo-shoot, the Mr. Simple MV making of, and their tour.  It is good, but I would of preferred a dance shot because of the strong wall of sound that this song is.

This looks like something any one can pull off with the right equipment.  I've seen better quality YouTube videos.  BiS made a video with a bunch of cellphones and it was something I enjoyed as much as the large production PVs.

I like this PV.  The use of colors and basic, fun patterns combined with the other elements (like the extras) make for a playful video.  They use some cool pans and angles.

I adore the stylish style of this video.  The stop motion and comic produces a fun and entertaining video.  It looks like a video you and your friends could make (while lubricated) with better production quality.

I do like the concept and the return to fun PVs.  The close ups look spectacular.  I however disapprove of the dance shot.  The CGI isn't used effectively.  It looks both basic and overdone at the same time.  The universe shot is better, but I don't love it.  The outfits are cool for the most part but I don't think it is flattering on all the girls.  Takahashi's doesn't suit her in my opinion.  I also dislike the choreography.  It reminds me of the bland dance section AKB did in Flying Get, but I like the rest of AKB's dancing with their microphones.  I don't like the fact that they are dancing in a line.  I like to be impressed by formations and how they transition between them.  Theirs just looks lazy.  Unfortunately the main shot is the dance shot.

This is like a better version of their PV for Anime Expo.  The stop motion and bright colors if fun.  The costumes reminds me older Morning Musume videos.  It is odd at parts that I don't even try to figure out like PONPONPON.  I don't like the far-away shot in the clouds with members clumped together.  It lacks a focus.

I've reviewed the preview, but they added in some cool behind the scenes shots at the beginning.  After watching Morning Musume's PV I have to compliment them for their choreography.  It isn't even that difficult, but combined with their strong dancing abilities and formations it is the best part of the video.  Good, considering this video is mostly dance shots.  I don't love the zoom in single shots of the various girls.  It seems stiff at times.  The center is good in her close-ups.  I have to mention the fact that I hate that these groups exist: one girl singing in what they call a girl group.  I want them all to sing or it is a solo artist with back up dancers!

Part of me wishes that this whole video was Ayu singing in the profile-close up.  It is just the preview so maybe they'll do some other interesting shots besides them zooming past people.  (I'm only going to review some of the previews Ayu released.)

The guy in drag sining to her is kind of awkward, but I like the group shot of her singing among half-naked guys.

I love the simplistic beauty of this PV.

I can't even tell if she is in the Happy Girl Project or in Hello Project.  This video is just vanilla, which is sad after hearing that she has a strong voice.  This isn't going to help her be successful.  Mano Erina is way more intriguing than her.

NOOOO!  A whole entire cat girl video?  Really?  I like the song, but the video makes me think the girls are cheap.  AKB48's was only a segment and was playful.  This is just annoying like girls on halloween who dress up in sexy clothes and just add animal ears and more make-up.

Are they all seducing the same guy?  They should of cast some other guys for more man candy.  I like how they messed with the traditional dance shot, which looks more like they are performing at a club.

Too much guy-liner for me (emokid *cough cough ; ).  The choreography is wonderful.  I don't get the winter theme.  Is it the lyrics?  Oh. . . they are saying they are so hot that they make ice melt in winter right?  The close up shots are meh.  I like a couple like the one with diagonal lines of light.  Besides the dance shots there isn't much worth watching.

A Wota's Room?

If you go to college you've probably have moved into your dorm or apartment by now.  One fun thing about the dorms is students using posters and other elements to show our personality and turning a bland room into a home.  Starting last year I started to become more interested in posters, partly to cover up a poor paint job (because I live in an old building).  Well, it has accumulated to the point that I had to plan out where I would put my posters.  My room is pretty intimidating, but I feel at home.

Idols On My Mind

There have been a couple of flavors I've been craving.  I am what is called a DD, which is short for 'dare demo' which means I like everyone.  I my have an oshi, but she stands just a step in front of the rest.  What is amazing is that out of all the 48 groups I don't have a single member that I dislike.  Some may rub me the wrong way at times, but I still like them.

Kimoto Kanon (SKE48)
She is just an adorable bad-ass.  I want to see more of her.  I'm waiting till there is a HQ rip of a Team E stage.

Oshima Yuko (AKB48)
I am super happy that she chopped off her hair.  I miss her short black hair that she had in the early AKBingo! days.  This length is great for her brunette hair and a nice compromise of the old Yuko from the early years and the popular years.   Plus, I enjoyed watching her pick out her favorite underwear as part as the bra campaign.

Ogasawara Mayu (NMB48)
I have been craving more NMB48.  Their first stage really impressed me.  Well, on one of their variety shows they brought back a viral, idol classic: idols vs. gross creatures.  I get kind of sick of the squealing, but we got pleasant surprise from Mayu. She was so okay with the snake she wore it as a hat.  New NMB oshi?
