Honestly, I don't know if this is impressive feat or not according to Japanese standards. It was reported on Tokyograph. It mentioned about it being popular with women of all ages. There are a couple reasons why I think that might be. For one, it is starring Nino from Arashi. Second, it is based off a popular (shojo) manga (Fumi Yoshinaga's manga "Ooku"). I'll post the summary of the manga later.
I was confused as to why they were making ANOTHER thing about Ooku. This is different than those other dramas and films. The manga is not based on the real events or anything close, it is science fiction which was probably influenced by Ooku (historical reference to the great interior where women of the shogun lived). There are some pretty popular stars, besides Nino, in this film too (Maki Horikita and Kou Shibasaki {of Battle Royale fame). The manga itself has been nominated and won quite a few awards, and sounds amazing!
In an alternative timeline of feudal Japan, a strange disease that only affects men has caused a massive reduction of male population, thus women have to pick up men's jobs, changing the social structure. Now, after 80 years of the initial outbreak and current man:woman ratio of 1:4, Japan has become completely matriarchal, with women holding important political positions and men being their consort. Only the most powerful woman -- head of Tokugawa shogunate -- can keep a harem of handsome yet unproductive men, known as "Ooku."
